Whoops!

I grabbed a bug yesterday.....didn't know when it was dropped, so when I got home I logged it. The guy who dropped it sent me an email wishing I had waited until he had logged it in.....is there anything I can do to redeem myself from this horrific mistake or should I just move on and chalk it up to a learning experience?

Other than apologize, yes, a learning experience!! If the TB isn't logged into the cache you grab it from, you should wait to see if they drop it! Sometimes things prevent one from getting the drop taken care of!

 

If, after a few weeks or so, you still haven't seen the bug dropped, you could write the cacher who is holding it and ask if they can drop it so you could grab it...always be polite of course!!

 

I found one a few weeks back in a cache other than where I found it, so I waited until today to log it. No movement and no one to contact, so I logged it!

Technically there is no harm done. Everybody get their stats and the bug stays on track. The holder simply didn’t get to include the drop in their cache log. (To add a personalized note they would have to post again or edit the drop log)

 

At a minimum try to wait three days, some people might not get back to their computer until the weekend passes.

 

You can wait longer but if you have to (or happen to) drop the bug into a cache it’s best to log it immediately. Otherwise another person might pick it up and then it’s even further off track.

 

Also, when you grab a bug you should first drop it into the cache you found it in and then retrieve it so the tracking stays accurate.

The thing is, I don't like to hang on to the bugs for more than a week....most of the time I like to drop them as soon as possible so the keep moving...

You did the right thing. After all, you kept the TB moving and that's all it matters. If the previous holder couldn't make the drop... bad luck.

 

But I'm guessing he's also pleased to see that the TB ain't lost.

If I don't hear from them them I grab it, log it into the cache I found it in, log it back out to me, and then log it into the cache I put it into. If you want you can then delete the grabbed log. That way it gets the correct mileage on it.

Ooooh, that's cold

We were out for an afternoon of caching one day. We picked up a TB about 4 p.m. and dropped off a couple while we were there. When I got home a half an hour later, the two I had dropped off had already been logged.

 

I had taken them to two caches that helped them meet their goal, and the person who picked them up had taken them 30 miles in the wrong direction. Luckily, a quick email to the person who picked them up got it all straigtened out--They deleted their log, I logged the TBs in the caches they had been to with me and into the one I dropped them off at, and the 2nd cacher started fresh from there.

 

Who would have had the "bad luck" if the second cacher hadn't been so obliging? Well, the TB (and it's owner, of course!). I usually wait a week before logging a TB that isn't logged into a cache--or at least I look to see if it looks like the previous holder is traveling and email them to warn them I am going to log the TB.

Waiting until the previous cacher logged it into the cache is only common courtesy. (There seems to be very little of that anymore.) E-mail whomever had it last, and wait three days to a week for a response or a drop. Grabbing bugs without waiting is extremely rude. (And despite what some say, it very seldom moves a bug any faster.)
