Waypoints in Excel -> GPS ?

I have generated a number of waypoints in an Excel spreadsheet and I'd like to get them into my Garmin 60CS. For ease of calculations, I am using UTM (which the Garmin is quite happy with).

 

But ... the Garmin software (Mapsource) wants it's own format or GPX format. Excel can produce tab delimited text files (or a variety of spread sheet files). Ironically, Mapsource can write tab delimited text files, but it won't read them.

 

Any suggestions? I could cut and paste them in one by one, but there are too many (about 100)

GPSBabel. It will open .csv or tab delimited files, and speaks Mapsource, or will send straight to the GPS.

Mapsource is not great for this type of data, and I don't see a way to import your UTM coords. I build and import/export files all the time for projects using survey software, but I also use expertGPS; for which I have paid the $60 dollars for. You can try easyGPS forever or download expertGPS for 30 days free. ExpertGPS will definitely bring in your excell data and then can be exported directly to your Garmin.

 

If you need help, I would be glad to help you.

There are a couple ways to format and convert between different gps formats in excel... I have some macro'ed the others are procedures to follow... throw me an example... contact me directly. thanks.

GPSTrackmaker does it all for you.

Import,export and save as many types like KML<KMZ<GPX<CSV<and a host of others.

 

You can open it then send to Garmin or 100+ other GPS recievers.

I know the New Acrobat(Adobe 8) PDF thingy works too but am still figuring all that out.

Adobe 8 GEOPDF is what I think it is called.

I have been doing some online workshops with Carasoft.

 

I just did a Excel for a E-911 mapping project and the Surveyor needed it in an excel spread sheet so I made one up and got it sent.

I know you can also use your maps and GPS with Adobe reader,quite nice but still learning it all.

I tried the Waypoint+ software, downloaded my waypoints from my GPSr, switched to UTM coordinates, and exported to a comma-delimted text file. Waypoint+ then was able to open the comma-delimted text file.

 

So, it will work with excel through a comma-delimted (CSV) file.

Thanks for the suggestions, but that discussion was a year ago. Since then I've moved everything to GSAK and everything works fine.

 

How do you guys find these old threads to respond to?

GPXtoPOI release notes as of 3/2/07

 

This program converts from GPX format to CSV format or vice versa. You can create waypoints in MapSource and then convert them to POI (CSV) files for download or sharing with others.

 

You can also convert POI (CSV) files that others have created, and then edit them in MapSource. Now that the Garmin POI loader supports GPX files, GPXtoPOI's most important role is CSV to GPX conversion.

 

The program has a few other special features:

 

1- It supports a command line interface, if you want to make it part of a batch, or just have shortcut that does a predefined conversion.

 

2- It supports a profile mode where an external profile can be used, allowing special conversions (one to many/many to one and various filters and text generation options).

 

3- It utilizes the recently documented fourth CSV parameter for comment information (which can include address, phone number, etc).

 

4- In the Waypoint/GPX file, you can include @NN (for instance @55) at the end of the waypoint name to indicate the alert speed, or you can put @55 in the "description" field for the waypoint in MapSource. It will automatically attach it to the name.

 

5- When converting from POI (CSV) to GPX, if there is an @55, or @25, etc. in the name, it will pull that off of the name, and dump the speed information into the description field.
