IP?

OK, I know that I have been asking a lot of questions on here, but I'm sure this is the last. On the Cache sites I notice that a lot of them in the descriptions mention an IP. What exactly is that?

Not sure what you are talking about....I think you need to link to an example! I looked at a random cache listing and the only thing that had "IP" in it according to the "find on page" in the edit menu was:

Without any additional information, the first thing that pops into my head is "Internet Provider", but for the life of me, I can't figure out why that would show up on a cache page.

 

I agree, a link or at least a cache gc number would help us help you!

I couldn't find IP in the geo-lexicon... Do you happen to mean PI ??

PI – “Poison Ivy”. Used generically to include poison oak, and poison sumac.

In the military, an IP is an Initial Point. On a cache, I have no other ideas. I've never seen it in a cache description.

If you're a surveyor laying out a property lot you may use an Iron Pipe or Pin on the corners. The map of the lot shows I.P. on the corners to indicate what to be looking for when doing a resurvey.

The most common definition of IP that I'm aware of is Internet Protocol, basically the way data is sent on the Internet.

It is in the first sentence right after the warning for the disclaimer. I am assuming that the closest answer is what NightPilot said with 'Initial Point' which is what i figured.

In that context - I would agree it means "initial point". Though I must confess to never seeing anybody else use it.

It's a very common term in the military. If you have no military experience, then it may not be familiar. I certainly didn't write the cache description, but at least on a first reading I would take it as Initial Point.

Believe it or don't, I rarely, if ever heard it in 22 years in the Army. But I just must have been in the wrong types of units. But it definately pops up on a DOD list of military terms: Initial Point

 

As far as a cache description, I can safely say I've never seen it. Have you seen it by anyone other than this cache placer? A moot point I guess, since Initial Point was pretty much everyones first guess.

Initial Point sounds right to me. Interestingly (or not), I spent part of the morning in a diesel-related forum, which made 'Injection Pump' come to mind.
