joburnet Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 I have an etrex Venture CX with a 1 GB microSD card and an old version of mapsource with the topo maps from 1999. Mapsource will only work with a serial port since it's an older version so I downloaded and installed the USB drivers from Garmin and then got SendMap which seems to be working fine. I tried uploading the 2500 *.img files from the Mapsource CD that I have. Everything seemed to transfer fine but I can't figure out how to load the maps. I go to the Map Setup page and can't find anything. I assume I'm just doing something wrong, any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Quote

You should be able to update mapsource to the latest version for free. The maps themselves will be unchanged. In the meantime, I'd figure out which maptile covers your immediate area and upload that by itself with sendmap20. Then check out the map setup page again. Or throw the card in a cardreader and look in the \Garmin directory to see how big the resulting .IMG files is (if any). I assume here that you have the version of topo (east, central, west) that covers the region where you are. I'm guessing East since it has closest to 2500 maptiles in it. Quote
joburnet Posted January 9, 2007 Author Posted January 9, 2007 You are correct in the version, I'm downloading the new mapsource right now and hopefully that'll work. Quote
joburnet Posted January 9, 2007 Author Posted January 9, 2007 (edited) The new version of Mapsource didn't do much because I don't have the unlock codes. I'm not even sure if this older version came with unlock codes so I didn't bother with it. I downloaded img2gps and it seems to be working fine but I can't find or use any maps I upload. I guess I'm just not able to switch to the new map so how would I do that? I'm now using a small area, just Washington DC which is 3.7MB's. I was just able to go to interface in the garmin unit and that brought up the microSD card which is G:\Garmin There is a file in there which is 3.7MB's named gmapsupp.img So the map is there so how do I look at it? New mapsource will get you USB support and is a Generally Good Idea. The locking stuff is immaterial to your mapset. If you have that .IMG on your card then you are heading in the right direction. Normally the map is made visible just by uploading it. I do not know why yours is not being seen. If if the map was toggled off in map setup, I would think it would be toggled back on by an upload. I have not tested that, though. Quote
+LandRover Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Go into into your map setup on the etrex and make sure your Topo maps are turned on. Quote
+Ckingrex Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 Go into into your map setup on the etrex and make sure your Topo maps are turned on. I have the etrex Yellow, is there any maps on there? Quote

There are now mapping etrexen that are in yellow cases (venture cx) but I assume you mean the original yellow etrex. No, it does not have the ability to store or display maps in the usual sense. I didn't think so. Yes it is just the entry level Yellow eTrex, just purchased in December. I was using it for geocaching until I got my new 60csx. I guess it is what you are use to, but I wish the 60csx was as simple to use as the eTrex. Of course the tracking is much better plus the maps. Quote
