+chaosmanor Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 I think we would need to just do a lottery for color choices. Number the cachers, then draw numbers to set the choosing order. I second this opinion! ... A luck-of-the-draw method is the only way that would end up being fair to all participants. Otherwise, some people will get special treatment (so what else is new)... Another option is to sort of split the difference. Let everyone put in their choice. Anyone who asks for a color that no one else asks for should get it. That's fair; if you are the only one who wants black, you should be able to have it. Then, all those who asked for a color that someone else also wants has a choice. They can draw straws for it (in some fashion), and the winner gets that color. That's fair; if three people all want purple, why should someone else who has no interest in purple get it by random draw? Let the three who want purple fight over it; nicely, of course Or, if one of the three decides to take another color not already chosen, then they should be able to. That's fair; they graciously let the other two haggle over purple, and they take brown instead. By now, about 2/3 of the colors (at least) will have been allocated with no hassle at all. Any colors still contested can be chosen by lot, and the losers will get their choice of whatever is leftover. This method will guarantee that at least 60% of us will get a color that we really want. Don't think so? Set yourself up a grid, and play with it. I was a math major in college, so I know my system will work. A purely random draw runs the risk of less than 30% getting a color that they like. I much prefer six chances in ten of getting something I want, to seven chances in ten of getting something I don't And the kicker is that only the very last person in all of this will have to take a color that they have no choice about. You have to like those odds. Quote
ParentsofSAM Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 I like chaosmanors idea. Because I see if we just do a random drawing people will be trading colors all over the place. Plus someone might get stuck with a color they just hate and that could cause them to drop out altogether, shrinking our box of crayons. Quote

Let us pick, and then let us fight it out amongst ourselves! Quote

Cydriver Posted January 26, 2007 Posted January 26, 2007 (edited) I was referring to a lottery system for your turn to pick the color you want. If there happen to be only 48 participants, there are more than 48 colors to choose from. No one would be assigned a color they did not want. Say participant 27 gets to choose first. Then they are lucky and are sure to get their first choice. Looking at the choices of actual Crayola colors, there are very similar shades, so if someone picked your first choice ahead of you, their may be a similar yet distinct color for you to choose. Some of us did not put in our requests for a certain color because we were asked not to. Who knows how this will all turn out. Edited January 26, 2007 by Cydriver Quote
+chaosmanor Posted February 17, 2007 Posted February 17, 2007 Updates? Is this idea still being considered? If so, we're still interested Quote
+UOTrackers Posted February 18, 2007 Author Posted February 18, 2007 It is still being done, but it is a long term project, I think I had said late summer. So I have not worked on it too much yet. I will likely get into this project at the end of March to start with designs again as the first ones didn't do so well. Hope thats ok with everyone! Quote
+UOTrackers Posted February 23, 2007 Author Posted February 23, 2007 I just sent out an email to everyone who has emailed me with interest in this project. If you are interested but did NOT receive this email, please send a message to GeoCrayons@yahoo.com. Thank you! Quote
