+Scotsbob
Hello. I found this marker next to a micro cache I found. I tried to look it up online and I could not find any info. I was wondering if it is of any significance. It says; U.S. Geological Survey Benchmark 10 TKM Elevation Above Sea 227 feet 1941 It is in the town of St. Helena in Napa County California at Silverado Trail and Fawn Park Rd. Thanks Ken I've just bought 4 hawaiian coins showing these markers, I realize that they are not trackable as geocoins but they are all individually numbered and I would like to know a little more about them , who issued them , why etc. Thanks in advance Edited December 22, 2006 by Scotsbob Quote Link to comment
ArtMan
Hawaiian coins? Are these souvenir items or legal tender? Either way, could you post a photo? -ArtMan- Quote Link to comment
+Scotsbob
Hawaiian coins? Are these souvenir items or legal tender? Either way, could you post a photo? -ArtMan- They look exactly like the picture above, on the obverse side it shows the benchmark area and co-ords here are the ebay pics http://cgi.ebay.com/Haleakala-Summit-Marke...5QQcmdZViewItem Edited December 22, 2006 by Scotsbob Quote Link to comment
68-eldo
Hawaiian coins? Are these souvenir items or legal tender? Either way, could you post a photo? -ArtMan- I can guarantee these would not be legal tender. Hawaii has used American money since the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893. Quote Link to comment
+Shorelander
Isn't that an Azimuth mark on the coin? Edited December 22, 2006 by Shorelander Quote Link to comment
+Scotsbob
Maybe I shouldn't have called them coins as they seem to be replicas of the benchmarks more than anything. Quote Link to comment
+Holtie22
scotsbob- Check out TU2875 for some insight into what these coins portray. Quote Link to comment
+Ernmark
I'll bet Scotsbob is referring to the benchmark replicas available here: http://www.benchmarkcoins.com/ - they offer 4 replicas of BM's from Hawaii (1-USGS, 2 USC&GS [an RM & AZ], & 1 - Hawaii Territory Survey) as well as others such at the Washington Monument (...didn't ArtMan recover that one when the scaffolding was up around that one? ). Scotsbob - A good primer on the purpose of these marks is available on the Benchmarking section of the geocaching.com site, if you haven't poked around there already. If I understand correctly, in the U.K. "trigpoints" are used for similar survey purposes. There are other good places to read up on US benchmarks - I'll let others provide the links (the wife has just informed me that we leaving to go shopping....lucky me ! edit: Well actually trigpionts may be more like out 'triangulation' or 'traverse' stations Edited December 23, 2006 by Ernmark Quote Link to comment
+GEO*Trailblazer 1
There are several who have done the benchmark coins. We do some of the trackable Benchmark geocoins. We even have a Benchmark coin club. BENCHMARK COIN CLUB Quote Link to comment
+rogbarn
They are made by Benchmark Coins International. They have also made various other benchmark coins, mostly in the western US. The Hawaii ones are not trackable but most (all?) of the others are. I have several (not the Hawaii ones though) and they are good products. Quote Link to comment
+Scotsbob
Thanks Rogbarn, that's exactly the info I was looking for, and the makers are the people I bought them from. The coins are excellent BTW Thanks (and thanks to all the other forum members who took time to reply). Quote Link to comment
