ATHF Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 I finally have a direct comparision to make and unfortunately I could not edit my other topic so I apologize for making a new one. I would love to hear from someone that has used both. I bought my father a foretrex 101 for x-mass, but just recently he mentioned he wanted a standard Garmin 60. I now have to debate returning the foretrex and grabbing a 60 or if the foretrex is comprable I will keep it. He will only be using it for geocaching. What do you guys think? They seem similar feature wise, I am just concerned with signal and accuracy. Will the 60 be that much better? Also the 60 has a "geocaching mode", what is that? Thanks for any help you can give. +hogrod Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 for geocaching, I would say get the yellow 60series. it is a MUCH better unit than the foretrex when it comes to geocaching. first off the foretrex is limited to 6character waypoint names and a outdated serial connection to the PC(doesn't even come with the cable). also I prefer the AA batteries of the 60 to the AAA batteries of the foretrex. The biggest reason I would buy him the yellow 60 is its ease of use.... the buttons are labeled so its much easier to figure out, and screen is larger. Quote

My main concern is the reception and accuracy of the unit. Waypoint names and computer connectivity do not matter. Basically I am looking at an $80 difference between the 2 units, I picked up the foretrex for 36.99 My father just wants a basic unit, not all the bells and whistles. He is currently using a garmin 12 Edited December 14, 2006 by ATHF Quote

Alphawolf Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 I have had both. I still own and use the Foretrex 101. The 60 would be superior to the 101 for geocaching. I use the 101 exclusively for backpacking. and I still feel it is the best unit going for backpacking. But not for geocaching. Quote
