+El Diablo Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Today’s Cacher will cease operations after this months issue. The magazine was a good concept and over the years has had some great articles, and an equally great staff! We have reached a point were it’s difficult to find staff as well as cachers to submit articles. Rather than struggle each month to put the magazine together I feel it’s best to lay it to rest. Maybe one day we can bring it back. I want to thank everyone for their support. Especially Groundspeak (Geocaching.com). The readers have always been our motivation, our reason to exist. We hope that you have enjoyed the experience as much as we have. I want to say a special thanks to all the staff of the magazine, both past and present. You people did an outstanding job for little reward. You are the best. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Jerry Carter AKA El Diablo President/ Publisher Today’s Cacher Quote
+Snoogans Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Sorry to hear it Jerry, but I STILL believe a geocaching magazine is a viable venture. Someone CAN make it work. Baton dropped! NEXT! Quote

Clan Riffster Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 It'll be missed, Brother. I hope the vacuum fills itself kwickly. Will the old issues still be available online? Quote
Grawp Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Sorry to hear the news. The magazine was a great asset to us here in South Africa, letting us know what the "other side" of the world was up to in the caching game. I know we're far away, but if there's any way we can help give us a shout. Quote
+TheAlabamaRambler Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Sorry to see it go. Thanks for all the work you and the others put into it. Quote
+briansnat Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 As a readerof and writer for the magazine, I will miss it. Thanks for all that you Sean, Dean and everyone else put into the magazine over the past couple years. I know it was a lot of work and there was no reward, at least financially. Does this mean I no longer get free GPS units to review ? Quote
markandlynn Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Sorry to hear this peeps. It was a great site. The Uk one suffered the same fate. Did you ever consider going quarterly rather than monthly ?? Quote
+erik88l-r Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Sorry to hear this, Jerry. But look at the bright side - now you have more time for carving your great hiking staffs. ~erik~ Quote
+mtn-man Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 That is a bummer. You guys did some great work. Quote
+ZSandmann Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Oh no! I have really enjoyed TC. I even have both of the printed editions and have read them as well as shared them at events, and everyone always thought it was a great idea. It's hard to believe there are dozens of carp magazines out there about everything from knitting to poodles but we couldn't rally around a caching mag. I hope that TC can come back in the future or that someone else will be able to breathe new life into the project. Cheers to ElD and Staff!!! Z Quote

You people did an outstanding job for little reward. You are the best. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Jerry Carter AKA El Diablo President/ Publisher Today’s Cacher Jerry, thanks for your heroic effort, and thanks for the update! My own sense from the start was that for such a magazine to survive well, the sport of geocaching would need to be quite a bit larger than it is now, with not only a far larger pool of active andenthusiastic participants willing and able to buy the magazine, but also a far larger pool of knowledgeable persons willing and able to serve as staffers. Of course, the other route that some such specialty-sport magazines take is to be published as part and parcel of the membership benefit for a society. There are a number of magazines like this. For example, I belong to a national caver's organization, National Speleological Society, and pay a yearly membership fee, and, as one of my member benefits, I receive their spelunking journal each month. My suspicion is that for such an open-market publication as your effort was to survive and thrive today, given the current rather small size and popularity of the sport, it would require massive and fanatical dedication by a full-time core team plus good funding from a source willing to consistently lose money for years. +Sioneva Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Is it archived anywhere online, so back issues can be read? I only ever got to read on e month, and it was good stuff! Quote
+TheAlabamaRambler Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Wonder who will be the first to list the print copies on eBay as geo-collectables, and how much they'll go for? I will be keeping mine! Ed Quote

Good question. Jerry are the old online editions going to remain available? There is a lot of great information in the back issues and I see them linked to all the time here. It would be terrible if we lost all that. Edited December 14, 2006 by briansnat Quote

We will at least back everything up in some format for future use. El Diablo Quote

+emurock Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 It's sad, I am going to miss Today's Cacher. I would also like to say thank you and all the staff, for making a great geocaching magazine. Quote
+A,J&BG Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Sorry to see it go! Looks like we are all going to be missing some good reading material! Quote
+Kabuthunk Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 What about changing it to be bi-annual, or 4 times a year instead? I'd think if it's hard to get 1 month of material for a magasine, 3 months should make it a lot easier... Dang... just my luck of me just starting geocaching as the only magasine for it stops producing :{ Quote
+RockyRaab Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 Just offer the archives on CD, el Diablo. If they aren't worth a couple of bucks to people, there's your answer. Quote

I think that's a good idea. I don't know about the rest of the paid subscribers, but I'd expect a free copy and maybe another for actually contributing to the zine, but after that I might buy a few to place in caches. Quote

I'd pay a couple bucks for the archives on a CD or DVD. So, count me in. It was a most awsume effort by all that were involved. Thank you for your time and effort in putting this together. Quote
+Isonzo Karst Posted December 15, 2006 Posted December 15, 2006 I'm sorry this didn't work out for you guys - it was an enjoyable read, and I thank you for your efforts. Quote
CacheMonkeez Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 You guys did a great job on the mag. Now I feel guilty for not writing more articles (I wrote one). Quote
+Cache_advance Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 I'm sorry to hear this news. Perhaps even more sorry that I hadn't heard of it until it was being disbanded. As an avid writer, and a relatively newbie (just a mere 135 caches logged), I would have enjoyed contributing when/where possible. Cache Advance Quote

+TEAM RETRIEVER Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Geez, am I ever sorry to hear this!!! I just today sent you an e-mail asking how I could help out with the magazine, Jerry!!! AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!! What about the idea stated above, where you make the magazine a quarterly issue? I belong to an organization that had a bi-montly newsletter, but it was never on time and always struggled for material. Once we went quarterly, everything ran a lot smoother! I hate to see it go and would love to help brainstorm for an alternative solution. Quote
