+tollerdudes
So, eTrex Legends don't average a location? I find that odd as my old GPS 12XL even averaged. Is this true? Quote Link to comment
+budd-rdc
I don't own one, but have used one, and I believe it's true. Quote Link to comment
+Team Four A's
It should. I own a Venture Cx and the owner's manual I have has both the Venture Cx and the Legend Cx in it. On page 13 of my book it talks about averaging the waypoint's location. You can also do it another way if you mark a waypoint then once you mark it at the bottom there are three choices from left to right there is Avg Map and OK. You can push the Avg button and then save and then ok to save the new Avgeraged waymark. I have done both the way the owner's manual says and the way I talk about second. I hope this helps you. Good Luck! Edited December 13, 2006 by Team Four A's Quote Link to comment
+El Diablo
My wife had a legend and I don't recall an average feature. El Diablo Quote Link to comment

+Cardinal Red
Just checked the Legend on-line Manual. No Averaging mentioned. Where my Legend C displays: AVG MAP OK The standard Legend Manual shows: GOTO MAP OK instead. Quote Link to comment
+apersson850
It's true that the old Legend didn't (or doesn't, since it's still for sale, I think) support this function. Some tests have been made, showing that averaging is of little value, since it's impossible to tell whether more points factored into the position contributes more or less accuracy. It also updates the estimated accuracy of the averaged value. This quite obviously takes into accounts changes in the EPE during the averaging. IME, whatever calculation they are using for this works very well. Quote Link to comment

+gpsblake
You access the averaging function while MARKING a waypoint. As you take more readings, the EPE will reduce, I've had it down to 6.3 feet without WAAS. It works pretty good when put on top of a NGS benchmark. The B&W Legend does not have this feature. However, it is of little value when finding a geocache since it won't average how far you are from the cache. You'll still get the "Garmin bounce" in the woods. Quote Link to comment

I've had very good luck getting very close to caches hidden by hiders who use it, even in dense redwood forests. Quote Link to comment
+tollerdudes
I'm meaning the old Legends, not the spiffy C's and Cx's that are out now. http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexLegend...s/legendBig.jpg Quote Link to comment

Doing it manually is mostly pointless, since you're not going to be able to get enough data points to ensure you're making things better, instead of worse. Set the GPS down, and leave it for a few minutes. Watch it, and if the coordinates seem stable, mark it and go home. Quote Link to comment
