+PopUpPirate Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Traditional horizontal control stations, triangulation or 'trig' stations (pillars and other survey marks) and vertical control (Bench marks) have been the mainstay of control information in Great Britain for many years. They provided the means to link surveys to the national horizontal and vertical datums as well as providing structure to a survey. To do this it was necessary to physically occupy either the triangulation station or bench mark with survey equipment and purchase the control coordinates from Ordnance Survey. Ordnance Survey has made a commitment to continue to offer traditional control information to surveyors who do not use methods such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) to provide control. However, due to the quantity of traditional stations and the expense of their survey, tied in with the greater accuracy and uniformity that new satellite-based survey techniques provide, it is neither sensible nor realistic for Ordnance Survey to maintain the triangulation and Bench mark network. http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/benchmarks Quote

+lordelph Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Barry Hunter will like it, but I think he has memorised all that data anyway. Go on, test him Quote
barryhunter Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 (edited) Barry Hunter will like it, but I think he has memorised all that data anyway. Go on, test him Well I basically understand the techy terms, and have downloaded their whole database (about 500,000 points) if that counts... (to create a better search as theirs is pants) Edited December 12, 2006 by barryhunter Quote
Deego Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 I will use Barry's data then :) . Their search is a little vague but thought it was just me Quote
Edgemaster Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Now, should I go and find all the chiselled benchmarks in my area? It would be a shame to put my osbmdb csv->gpx converter, benchmark/flushbracket/trigpoint versions of lordelph's icons and memory map export macros to waste! Quote
