samiller71 Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 I have seen some user profiles indicating that he/she has created several hundred caches, with many being over a hundred miles apart from each other. This leads me to ask how that person can possibly manage such a large number of caches over such a wide area. My guess is that they cannot do it, which leads me to ask if the cachers in this forum believe this to be an irresponsible obsession. A cache not maintained may ultimately turn into litter if a muggle, weather, etc harms it. Should there be a limit to how many caches one creates? Quote
+sbell111 Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 ... Should there be a limit to how many caches one creates? No. Some people are able to maintain gobs of caches. Others can't handle one. Quote
+briansnat Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 Should there be a limit to how many caches one creates? No. Some people have no problem maintaining hundreds of caches. Others can't even take care of one. Actually, I find that most of the poorly maintained caches I've encountered were placed by someone who has one or two hides, then lost interest in the sport. Now excuse me because I have to head out and check on a cache of mine that was reported missing over the weekend. Quote
+StarBrand Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 (edited) No limit. I have caches over a wide geographic area but I regularly travel around it as well. Makes it not much of a problem to maintain them. I love hiding as much as finding. Just because you would have trouble doing it doesn't automatically mean that all of us would have trouble. Some have trouble with 1 cache placed a few hundred feet from thier front door. People just have to understand thier limitations. Edited November 17, 2006 by StarBrand Quote
+Renegade Knight Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 It's going to depend on the cacher, and the type of caches etc. Remote caches seldom if ever need maintanence. Urban caches often do. 200 urban caches will keep someone busy. 200 remote caches won't take nearly as much work. Quote
+Markwell Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 (edited) Yes there is a limit of how many caches you should place. You know you're over that limit when you have 1 more cache than you can maintain. What's that number? That's something you've got to figure out for yourself. +DSine Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 I don't think it is irresponsible to have a lot of caches as long as they are maintained. Maybe the cacher in question is a trucker or someone who travels often over the same route so they can maintain each cache. Some people can handle a lot and some can't handle any. Quote
+wimseyguy Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 Yes, a person can have too many caches. But just like the sleep-number bed, that number is different for each hider. You need to figure out your own number, grasshopper. The real question is can a person have too many forum posts, or start too many threads? Quote
+Isonzo Karst Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 most of the poorly maintained caches I've encountered were placed by someone who has one or two hides, then lost interest in the sport. briansnat, right as usual....... and RK has a good point too..you can own a bunch of remote ammo cans, and not incur much maintenance effort. They're either there, or maybe burnt or carried off in a flood. Quote
+alexrudd Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 You think three-digit hide numbers are bad? Quote
+TrailGators Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 I don't like limiting experienced cachers but I do think it would be a good idea to limit the number of caches that a newbie can place. If people cached for awhile before placing their first cache they would learn about the better types of caches and techniques. Quote

+Bad_CRC Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 I've seen plenty of people with 1 or 2 caches who don't maintain them. and then there's King Boreas, who has over 1100 caches here in Minnesota, and he seems to do a perfectly fine job with maintaining the whole bunch. Quote
+programmer64 Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 59 caches placed, 48 active. Furthest cache from my home 150 miles. No problem here, sometimes it'll take a few days to get to a cache for maint, but I manage. Quote
Earthdog Patrick Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Instead of questioning prolific hiders, why not question cachers with hardly any hides? It's the hiders that keep the sport going. Quote

I'll keep that in mind the next time it's a toss-up between looking for caches and sitting around the house. Quote

I wouldn't question someone who doesn't hide. If they can't possibly maintain caches, why should they feel forced to hide one? Quote
+mgoose Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 NO If I place one aways from the house I try to find some one in the aera that mite help. In case I can't get there soon. I have done a hole weekend 400miles round trip just takeing care of them. Like every one has said some can ,some can't or wont!! Quote
