+slippeddisk Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 I have not been benchmark hunting to long, but found one yesterday that I thought was odd. The mark was mounted in a slab of concrete in a lawn. I have found them on bridges and buildings, bolders and poured concrete monuments but nothing like this. It seems to me that this would not be a stable setting for a marker . This slab has been pretty busted up over the years and I'm sure it has been jolted out of place by mowers and such. Was this a common pratice to mount markers in such structers? Quote
mloser Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 I doubt if that slab was set just for the mark. It probably had some other use at some point--a flagpole base, a cover for a well, any number of things, and the setting agency just used the existing slab for the mark. Quote
+NorthWes Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 Fairly common in my limited experience... less of them survive than those mounted to 'massive structures', it seems, but it is handy for satellites! Quote
Bill93 Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 I can't tell from the picture what the concrete was for. If it was a tower base, it might go several feet down and be quite stable. Quote
+Ernmark Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 ...I've run across these settings a number of times: JV3354 - cover for an old well & JU0435 - sewage manhole (don't stare at your GPSr or datasheet when looking for this one ..just in case !!) Quote
