I am confused, How am I supposted to fit a pencil in a micro cache? I bought a micro cache container from Groundspeak and I have no idea on how to fit a pencil in it.

You don't have to include a pencil. In fact, for a container that small, you probably shouldn't even try (overstuffing a cache of that size will just make a mess out of the log).

Just mention on the cache page that there is no writing implement in the cache, and you'll be fine.

Yep, there's some caches that I have that are the size of the tip of my pinky, and about 1/2" tall. There's no way to fit it in there. Just say BYOP and they will usually know what it means.

You will be surprised how small you can cut a pencil down to. You can easily get a pencil into those Groundspeak micros. Cut a golf pencil in half and sharpen the cut end and you have a mini pencil with two points.

Have you tried using some WD-40, a hammer, and a roll of duct tape to get it in there?

Just don't put one in it. Most cachers carry a pen or pencil with them anyways. Of course, I tend to forget mine, but only when doing caches where I need one.

Random thought... you could always take 3/4 of an inch of the graphite from the center of a pencil, take electrical tape to wrap up most of it, and... yeah, there ya go... extremely small pencil. People would have to sharpen it with a knife or something if it got dull, or you could check on it once every so often... but yeah, if I should ever want to create an uber-micro cache, that's the method that I'd use.

Has anyone found a source for pencils smaller than a golf pencil? My sig item is a geocaching survival kit, and I've had to cut about an inch off each golf pencil to get them to fit in the watertight container.

It seems like there must be thin mini pencils out there somewhere, but I can't find them.

would a tiny sharpie work? Also, I have seen small pens, usually associated with crappy items at the dollar store.

The mini sharpies I've seen were about 4 inches long. I'm looking for something just a bit longer than an AA battery.

I'll admit, though, after cutting down a pencil to fit, it's a bit difficult to hold correctly so you can write legibly.

Look for those pencils that are a tube full of short leads, each in a little piece of plastic. When one gets dull, you pull it out, stick it in the other end, and a new, sharp lead pops out the other side.

One of the inserts will fit into tiny caches.

You're not really "supposed to". :P Most cachers understand, when seeking micros, that they'll need to provide their own writing implement; and many micros specify on the cache page to BYOP.

And I have to say that when I DO find writing implements in micros, they're usually a PITB - either they're so small I can't write with them ANYWAY, or they make it nearly impossible to fit the log back in.

Check out these Zip Pens. They are about an inch long and you can cut off the ring portion with a blade. Staples was selling them a while ago and I picked up a bunch to use as cache swag and also for my micros. Alas I'm out of them and haven't seen them at Staples since.

Exactly.

I can't write with something that small, and I do cary a pen for such emergencies. Normally it's 1/2 mile back in the car but that's the breaks. Espeically if the log said to bring your own writing stick.

Anyone know what these are called, or where to get them? I can picture them - must have seen them at some point several years ago.

You're with me. For the life of me, I can't think of what they're called, and no amount of Googling is helping.

Last place I saw them was the doller store. I even bought some, but I have no idea what they are called.

Don't worry about a pencil.

Just mention that they need to bring their own. VERY COMMON.

Besides, every geocacher should bring along a pen or pencil... FOR ANY CACHE! Many times, I have opened a full size cache only to find all writing implements missing. Or, the pencil lead is broken or too worn down to write with. (That's also why I also carry spare pencil sharpeners to leave in caches).

If a geocacher can't sign a log due to missing writing implements, it is their own fault, and they will learn to carry their own in the future.

Been there, done that!

I put a ball-point pen in a film-can cache box once. Took the "pen refill element" out of the plastic pen handle, then cut it to about an inch long. I forget how (it's brass tubing); maybe by just bending it back and forth til it broke.
