+small oaks Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Have you asked yourself are we in a same mass. Wouldn't you like to have possibility to be a little be different....How about you have option to give: , : , , , , , , and so on Smilies or similar logos in found it place where there is only nowadays? Even blue not found smilies could have more variation. As many times you are not sad if you didn't find the cache as the multi and micro and others were so fun to seek that you could give Blue happy smilie. With this change you could show and comment with logs what kind of experience cache was to you. I know there can be smilies in a logs already but this would be different. Found it cache with many or would be quite special! Other people would notice these too as they are always seen first in a logs. and blue could be still as normal setting as today so you can use this feature or not.
+Super_Nate Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 ummm....that is what a cache log is supposed to do. It is supposed to describe your cache experience. Use the provided emotions to juice up what you are trying to say in your log. Stop saying TFTC in your cache log....be creative.
+small oaks Posted October 26, 2006 Author Posted October 26, 2006 Well! Writing cache log is where you should comment your visit but I mean that if you have tried for example to have your first FTF or get one great geocoin and you just to notice that someone has been there just before you and took everything goins there. You might want to show how you were feeling.....Sign before log is still that as you would like it to be or other not so happy sign.
+Okiebryan Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Cute idea, but I suspect that the devil would be in the details...
+small oaks Posted October 27, 2006 Author Posted October 27, 2006 Cute idea, but I suspect that the devil would be in the details... Maybe not devil. Not before there is red smilie with horns..I prefer those yellow and blue ones.
+flask Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 yes, very cute idea. i think it is positively wretched. the cuter things get, the more i want to scream. if you EVER find me using those appalling little smilies, which i think are only for those who have severe cognitive deficits AND a complete lack of good taste, i want you all to take me out and have me shot. meanwhile, i find other people's use of smilies to be a very useful tool: those who use them are best avoided and by a large margin. it saves me the trouble of having to pay attention to what these poor saps have to say; i can pass swift judgement and not waste my time in social interactions only to find out at some later date that the person involved is not only mentally deficient, but lacks good judgement. a multiple-choice-near-match-of-actual-thoughts selection of distasteful little faces is no match for actual words. be a dear and try to string your thoughts together and use actual words in your cache logs.
Mushtang Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 If I stop using capital letters, I want you all to take me out and have me shot. It's absurd the way bad grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. is dismissed on the internet. It's somehow acceptable for some reason that I have yet to understand. On topic though, I agree that the log should be the place to describe the cache experience. A lot of cache owners read MOST of the logs left on their caches in emails that are sent out, and not on the cache pages themselves. Those don't even show the smileys, do they?

I didn't mean to ridicule you, so I apologize if it came across that way. I was only pointing out the irony that you would use smileys to dismiss someone and assume that they were "not only mentally deficient, but lacks good judgement", but someone else might do the same to you based on your writing style.
+KBI Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Words, punctuation marks and cute little smilies are ALL legitimate tools of communication. Accept or discard each as you see fit, but please don't be too quick to criticize others for how they choose to express themselves. I think those cute little smilies serve a critical purpose. Text-only communication is unnatural for humans. Facial expressions can help clarify strings of ASCII which might otherwise be easily misunderstood.
+KBI Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 if you EVER find me using those appalling little smilies, which i think are only for those who have severe cognitive deficits AND a complete lack of good taste ... Have we met? Sounds like you know me.

A lot of cache owners read MOST of the logs left on their caches in emails that are sent out, and not on the cache pages themselves. Those don't even show the smileys, do they? When living in broken english country like Finland where english is learned from American tv series the english grammar and spellings and puctuations does not come easily with in writing. Meaning that when this is not my native language and i'll try to write as well as I can. I'm sorry of all the errors I made and will continue to make . Still it's better to write broken english than writing in finnish that nobody exept finns understands atleast in this forum. Geocaching is still worldwide hobby so it would be very sad if only perfect english speakers can write their comments and requests here. My point is still not understood. Each log have atleast one smilie want it or not. I'm not especially fond of smilies either (still writing for those) but I do think that logs can be conflicted to those Found it/Didn't Find it signs ; ( and blue ) what they should represent that there should be some other alternatives to choose from to make these more compatible. There might be worldwide differences how people log their visits in a internet, but still some do write those logs in caches page. I think most logs in Finland are writen just that way and very few comes straight to owner by email.
+sbell111 Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 I'm getting some wicked deja vu. There it is. I thought I was going bonkers.
+flask Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 the key words were "vitriolic hyperbole" and "rant". although i have nothing but disdain for cute smileys, many of my friends use them. i would not think to dismiss them for it. i do, however, get the heebie-jeebies anytime anyone suggests that more of them be made available for cache logs, which i think was the topic of the OP. i also hate it when people use a comma-splice instead of proper sentence structure and punctuation, but i don't toss people aside for it. in real life i'm a relatively sensible little middle-aged lady. you may choose to interpret me literally, or you may infer a nod and a wink. i'm good either way. small oaks, your english is just fine.
+sbell111 Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 ... you may choose to interpret me literally, or you may infer a nod and a wink. i'm good either way. ... You know, if you'd thrown in the occasional smiley, we wouldn't have to guess.

Not trying to pick a fight -- it's just that I still don't understand the difference.

+alexrudd Posted October 29, 2006 Posted October 29, 2006 How about this: when logging a cache, there is an option to select the level of grammatical correctness you will be using? (Now you can't tell how I meant that sentence to come across )
+small oaks Posted October 30, 2006 Author Posted October 30, 2006 (edited) How about this: when logging a cache, there is an option to select the level of grammatical correctness you will be using? (Now you can't tell how I meant that sentence to come across ) Not exactly what I had in mind! But if this kind of system would come use it as you will. Somebody else might use it for expressing feelings of finding the cache or have some irony to log. Like Thank you for the great cache. Edited October 30, 2006 by small oaks
