+frefel
I want to utilize a set of tracks from my Garmin etrex to visualize in some mapping program (Google Earth?). I understand that I have to convert the Garmin data to a .gpx file. What program do I best use to do that? Thanks. Quote Link to comment
+PDOP's
If your eTrex came with MapSource you can use that. There are also a number of free programs that will download tracks and allow you to save them in GPX files. I like GPSTrackmaker freeware. Quote Link to comment
robertlipe
You don't say which OS or which Etrex you're using, so I'll give the only answer that I know will write GPX from any of them: http://www.gpsbabel.org. Quote Link to comment
+frefel
Thanks RobertLipe and PDOPS. I'm using a Garmin eTrex Venture and an eTrex Vista C. I have MapSource - I'll browse through the material to see if I can figure out how to convert directly to a .gpx from there. Otherwise I'm using either Win 2K or XP depending on the computer at the time. I'll check out gpsbabel and gpstrackmaker in addition to the MapSource. Quote Link to comment
+apersson850
In Mapsource, you simply use File -> Save As, and then specify the format to be gpx instead of gdb. That's all it takes. Quote Link to comment
ArtMan
You might try the excellent USAPhotoMaps, which will import tracks directly and display them on a USGS topo maps or aerial photos. -ArtMan- Quote Link to comment

It allows you to download tracks, view then, view elevation profiles, speed, etc. It has a neat button "Send tracks to Google earth". It works great! Quote Link to comment
+frefel
In Mapsource, you simply use File -> Save As, and then specify the format to be gpx instead of gdb. That's all it takes. My MapSource (ver. 6) only offers "Save As" to "All Files" or to "Garmin .gdb files". There is no ".gpx" option. Quote Link to comment

robertlipe
I have ver. 6.11.5.0 of MapSource and I see Save As only with .gdb, .mps and .txt - no .gpx If you have no data to save (at least one waypoint, track or route) the 'save as' option doesn't offer GPX as an option. Quote Link to comment
rws
Get the free upgrade to the latest version 6.11.5.0 at Garmin.com I have ver. 6.11.5.0 of MapSource and I see Save As only with .gdb, .mps and .txt - no .gpx You need to have a file opened in Mapsource first then the .gpx option will show up in the Save As pulldown. You can view your .gdb or .gpx files on Google right from Mapsource....click View...then View in Google Earth. Edited November 3, 2006 by rws Quote Link to comment
