We recieved an email last night regarding one of our caches. The woodlands where it was hidden was having a bit of tlc to it. They were clearing some logs and the tree surgeon found it. He could have just chucked it away but he decided to take it home with him and contact us. He phoned us today and we are arranging to go and collect it off him. It just makes you feel good that someone who is a non cacher will go out of their way to save your cache.

He did ask me if he was classed as a muggler and I replied...yes but a very nice one! He has signed the log and done some swaps too!

In the same vein, I or rather my son has a cache in some local woodlands.

I always put a sticker on the box identifying it as a geocache with its name, our user name and the GAGB answerphone number on it. 07092 040 416

Whilst on holiday in the south of France last year I recieved an email from the Bill D (wwh) wearing his GAGB hat informing me that someone had found my cache and would I contact them ASAP on a mobile phone number.

I texted them straight away explaining that I would be in touch as soon as we arrive home, expecting the person to be local to the cache and consequently to our home.

On arriving home I rang to enquire if they had kept the cache for me...

...He said he certainly had kept our "little box of cars" safe and sound.

I'll pop 'round for them now then if that's OK....where do you live?

Childwall, Liverpool came the answer...

..He'd been out walking his dog in our locale whilst visiting relations and his dog had unearthed the cache.

Not knowing wher he got it from he decided to take it home....some 10-15 miles away!

We went around straight away to collect it, not wanting and infact refusing a monetary reward for his goodwill I, with his permission, gave a fiver to his kids to buy some sweets/comics etc.

The cost of the journey to pick it up and the "reward money" far outweighed the value of the cache but I was made up that a "muggle" had taken the time and effort "to do the right thing" rather than bin it or worse still vanalise it and scatter the contents, as sooo often happens! [:yikes:]

Cheers

Dave

Most of the caches seem to have a general description of caching and the geocaching website reference. I amnot convinced that I would beable to contact the owner if I wasn't a member of the caching fraternity!

I am loathe to place my personal email address or phone number on the cache so what have other cache owners done?

Well you could set up a Gmail/Hotmail/Yahoo/.... mail account which you use only for this purpose.

If you want a Gmail invite drop me a mail 'cos I've got about 150 going free.

I don't use my proper phone number. Instead I bought a very cheap sim card (£5) and put it in an old mobile phone I had kicking about. I leave this at home and check it daily for voice mail / texts. That way I can be contacted, but if anyone undisirable gets hold of the number I've always got the option to bin the sim, buy a new one and just update my caches with a new number.

Wayhayyyyyyyy we got another email from our cache saver today, they said maybe they should take up geocaching!!

We have offered to take them out on a trip if they want to know what its like.

At least they have 1 found cache to start with.

I have just checked out 'how' a finder may react when finding an inappropriate cache.

The sheet informs the finder to go to : geocaching.com

This is not a page I visit frequently. Once there if seems reasonable for the finder to click on the 'contact us' link. This page then informs a land owner how to communicate with Groundspeak who will pass the comment on to the cache owner.

It seems as though there is a reasonable process in place - perhaps this should be tested anonymously occassionally!

As I walked across burnt grass to this one I expected the worst but it had been saved by Blue Watch from Cumbernauld fire station who attended the fire. They signed the log and re-hid the cache.:wub:

I wonder if Pugh, Pugh, Barney, Mcgrew, Cuthbert, Dibble & Grub would have had the same attitude if the cache had contained lighter/marches/candles.. or other inflamable 'contraband' that some people still insist on leaving in caches.
