Geocoin Fest 2007- A National coin event!

I posted a few housekeeping note in the donation thread, but this is a better place for them.

Attendance to the event is free.

There will be a limited number of gift bags available at an affordable, but yet to be determined, price. The bag will include an event T-Shirt, and and attendee coin at a minimum.

There will be at least two separate games for the main event. A coin challenge quest, and a "Guess the Number of Coins in the jar game."

There may be a small fee involved here, it depends on how much sponsorship we get.

Also, in the evening there will be 40 spots available for a Geocoin Poker tourney. More details later.

It's still early in the planning, and things are still changing.

However, the day and city of the event are set, so don't worry about that.

Once these things are finalized, we will provide you with all the necessary info.

Here is another thought I just had...watch out!!!

I am going to send out some coins I have been sitting on, and I am going to give them a mission...

Their mission will be to spread the news about GeocoinFest 2007. <_<

So many cachers never enter these forums that it would be fun to see if we inspire any new coin collectors by bringing them to this event. What better opportunity for them to get into it since most or at least many of the coin vendors will be in attendance!

Actually, I may even change the goals of some of my coins that are out there already!!

Link to comment

send new ones out with tags, and make their goal to make it back to caches in temecula. it'll get more exposure if it's right with the coin. if you haven't already get a hold of as many groups/orgs as you can and spread the news through them. a very tiny percentage of our members ever go on here (i'd say less than 5%)

Sounds like fun out there in Sunny California! Wish I could make it!

Hummmmmmmm, wine country, caching event, close to a cigar store I have ordered from, Snow here is over 4 feet around that time, 80+ degree temps, 50+ evening...sheese here it's like -30C around then. This may sound like something I may want to attend...hence planning started NOW.

Link to comment

We've been asked if we'll be there but unfortunately we can't attend....much as we'd love to and it is SO CLOSE! We are leaving Feb 15th to attend a wedding out of the country on Feb 19th...and we're the witnesses so there's no excuses! As we watched this Event unfold we realized we were going to have to miss it this year. Keep it on the west coast and we'll be there for sure next year!! The location sounds awesome!

What is the status on the hotel information?

Wasn't somebody trying to get some discounts?

Yes, the information is coming together and will be posted on the website when it's all be accounted for. :tired: That should be soon.

In addition, since it is a holiday weekend, many hotel chains were not giving any discounts. So if you were looking to stay anywhere other than the Ramada or Comfort Inn, feel free to book your hotel stay.

Look out! I had an idea!

I didn't say it was a good one...I just said it was an idea! :)

I have been editing the mission on my travelling coins. I have some out there that have managed to stay in circulation! :(

Since there are so many cachers that don't enter the forums, and since we are drawing people from across the country for this event, I was trying to think of ways to spread the word to the rest of the caching crowd. There are many people that would probably like to make the trip for this event, but since they don't read the forums, and the event will be out of their normal search area, they won't hear about it until it is over!

So, I have been editing the mission on my coins, and I will be releasing quite a few more over the next couple of weeks. Their mission is to spread the news about the upcoming GeocoinFest! I am including the GC number for the event so they can look it up if they are interested.

Link to comment

C4 - Do we have a GC# for the event yet to put on the tags to get the word out? Also what will the website address be so I can include that on the tag too.

That sounds like a good idea - and you're right, a lot of people don't come into these forums.

Some days I think that they are the smart ones. ;)

They definitely have more money than us here is the geocoin forum!:laughing:

Link to comment

Not C4, but I can answer your questions... GCZ5V8 (not much there yet) and www.geocoinfest.com (again, not much there yet except a forum)

Bare with us, we're writing web copy as fast as time allows. 3.5 of 9 sections drafted thus far.

Edit added... don't bother signing up on the website. what's there is going to be moved and is only temporary for admin use. Thanks

Those are discounts, hate to see their regular prices.

Those were all the major chains, and are all hotels. We also have several Motels in the area that are considerably less. Motel 6 was listed, but I'll try to grab some other names for the website as well. (I mean, you don't really need anything more than a shower since you will be out caching all night right?) :D

On another note, many of you have contacted us regarding registration. I apologize since I got the event page up before we had finished the website. We will either post a note here, or start a new thread once the registration page is active.

We will also post a note on the event page itself, so it may be easier to add the page to your watchlist. That way, you will get notification automatically when the site is up and running.

$149.99 to $169.99 is the average weekend rate on a holiday weekend at most of the "decent" establishments. Southern Cal is expensive! Of course as C4 said, there are cheaper chains out there as well as camping.

It would have been as high or higher in Vegas on a holiday weekend too.

Reserved my flight last night, I'll look for a motel I think. I wonder if I can get 50 lbs of coins in my carryon?

Not sure what airline you're flying but Delta has a limit of 50lbs per bag. I bought one of those small rolling luggage bags for coins. That way they'll be in their own. My regular suitcase usually weighs in the high 40lb range w/o coins in it.

As an FYI for you air travelers, I fly with my trader coins on a regular basis. It is not uncommon for a "special" search of your coins. that's a lot of metal in one spot, and DOES NOT X-ray well. Plan 15-20 minutes extra to explain your hobby to the friendly security staff. I always put them in their own tray, like you would a laptop. They typically wipe my coins as well with the chemical paper and machine test it for explosives.

I suppose you could check them in, but I'm not up for losing my luggage and coins. I'll keep 'em with me, thanks :)

Better safe than sorry :)

Thank You! My question is now answered, as I wondered if I should carry my coins with me or check them. If the airlines wipe the coins, then I take it they are not in a binder, but loose in a case or box? I guess I'll have to watch taking some of the odd shaped coins with me as they may be considered weapons!

Nope, no binder. Just a big tupperware box of my traders :) I've never flown with my collection.

I'd never fly with my collection either. I also have my trader coins in a tupperware container, but the reason I asked is some of the events I've been too, people are now bringing their traders in binders to make it easier for people to look at them and for the owner to quickly locate a coin for a trade. The binder would make it a little difficult for airport security to wipe the individual coins easily.

How about we call each other "Coindexters"? :D

LMAO! :)

The trick is to go with a coin buddy and have them go first, then they get taken aside and you get to move through! :D I have been stopped every time, but that might not have to do with the coins. :)

There are several airports nearby that you can fly to, although Ontario (ONT) usually has the best fares.

Ontario Airport- (50 minutes driving. Straight shot down I-15)

San Diego Airport (Around an hour driving...longer with traffic.)

Palm Springs Airport (Just over an hour)

LAX (Figure 1:45 on an average day, bad traffic can make it much worse!)

For those coming down the left-hand coast on Alaska Airlines, additional alternative airports (especially if you're trying to find hard to find frequent flyer seats) include:

Orange County (John Wayne) -- Not sure of best route (55 to 91 to 15, or over the mountains via San Juan Canyon, or...a little local knowledge would help)

Long Beach (91 to 15)

I've carried thousands of Alaska geocoins through airport security between Anchorage and Fairbanks, sometimes hundreds at a time from the Alaska Mint, without a problem. I tell the TSA screener I have a box(es) of coins and I leave them open for easy inspection.

Both those airports are a PAIN to get in and out of. But if it gives you the cheapest flight it might just be worth it.

But the best way to get from John Wayne is to go 55 - 91 - 15 not over the mountains unless you would like to take the scenic route.
