+Cornerstone4
I thought I would start a new thread, since we have picked a time and city. (The place is selected, but I don't have coords for it yet.) The event will be February 17th, 2007. The location is Temecula, CA. We will add a link to the event page once it is up, but mark your calendars now. In the other thread I posted some travel info, so I repeat myself here. There are several airports nearby that you can fly to, although Ontario (ONT) usually has the best fares. Ontario Airport- (50 minutes driving. Straight shot down I-15) San Diego Airport (Around an hour driving...longer with traffic.) Palm Springs Airport (Just over an hour) LAX (Figure 1:45 on an average day, bad traffic can make it much worse!) February usually is very mild here. It's not uncommon for day time temps to reach the 80s. Nights typically drop to the low 50's. I will post a list of available camping sites later, and once I get her the info, AtlantaGal is working on getting us the best discount rates at the local hotels! I look forward to putting faces to the names! Dave Quote Link to comment

+AtlantaGal
Sweet I thought that whole idea had fell through, only 922 miles from home we might just be able to make it. As far as Vegas, it did. But C4 came to the rescue with a workable suggestion and his invaluable assistance For all intensive purposes, it is a 1 day event. However, there are other different events during the same weekend in close proximity. Also, the location is in "wine country" and not far from Disneyland. This all makes it the perfect place for a family vacation. I really hope our friends in Canada and overseas will consider coming and spending the week in Southern California. To add: it this just going to be a 1 day event and will it be listed as a mega event? The coin event itself is just the one day. There is another event on Sunday, just up the road about 8 miles. That one had over 300 in attendance last year, so this year the Temecula Valley group is teaming up with at least two other groups so we should hit Mega status. I cleared it with Groundspeak, and since the events are in separate cities, and are separate in nature, we can list them both as separate events. (This was important since the local event is in it's third year, and the coin event is just starting out, but needs it's own identity.) Anyway, no event can be listed as Mega unless it has had the required attendance in the year prior. However, once the event is held, Groundspeak will change the icon, and everyone's accounts will reflect the Mega icon. So, if we have 500 people show up to the coin event, we will be overflowing, but we will get the Mega icon! Quote Link to comment

LOL, that's what us on the west coast said about having it on the east coast. I think part of why it is on the west side is that all of the woodstocks have been far from here and so we wanted a turn. And the foolish and crazy Cornerstone volunteered to do it. Silly man. Quote Link to comment

+Rubiconlwb
My wife and I would love to attend but we just went to the area in June after saving for a couple years. We went with our daughter, son-in-law and grand-daughter and had a great time! We stayed at the Disneyland Hotel with tickets for 3 days, San Diego for the zoo and Sea World, the beach, Universal Studios. Like I said, it was great fun and we would love to come back but the money might be a little tight this soon. We would love to meet some of the regulars on this forum and see some coins we haven't seen before. At any rate, we will sure keep this in mind and maybe try to make it if we can go for only a couple days and not take in the tourist spots this time. Quote Link to comment

+Cornerstone4
We are working on putting up a website for the event. It will be easier for us to link to other information that way. AG is working on getting us a group room rate, and that info will be posted here. I'd like to use the site as a more centralized location for information. We will include: -Alternate places of lodging and contact info -Available camping facilities -Local attractions that are not mainstream. (Hot Air Ballon Rides, fishing, casino, etc.) -Local timeshare info for people wanting to use that option -Local restaurants. (In fact, I plan on enlisting help from the locals on this. I want to create a gpx file with everyone's favorite eateries. We can put together a list, and then provide the file for anyone to download.) And anything else that may come to mind. For those of you attending from the area, you won't need this info, but I realize that some of you this may be your vacation. It would be nice to know what is available. Anyone that is making this a family vacation, please feel free to contact me via the email in my profile, and we would be happy to help you make any necessary arrangements. (And maybe even use our Disney or Knott's passes and go with you!) In addition to the planned festivites, we wil have an informal meet and greet, (No log books, no smilies earned), at Pat & Oscars. A local restaurant that has a room they will hold for us. That's all for now. Quote Link to comment

Since I originally supplied the CoinDEX name... how about GeoCoinDEX. Since it was going to take place in Vegas, I thought a play on the name worked well for the location. Since it's not in Vegas now, I don't know how well the orginal CoinDEX name really applies. Adding the Geo prefix puts it back into it's true context. +Cornerstone4
No matter what it's called, I'm still gonna try to make it. Bottom line is it is going to be called FUN. A lot of time was spent on the name before I got involved. To be completely honest, the name GeocoinFest doesn't knock my socks off. That is why I originally though instead of going by years, we could do "GeocoinFest- Geopalooza!" this year, and then if it hits Vegas later, add the "Coindex" descriptor. The problem is, that doesn't fit on a coin. I hate having to put on my glasses to read text on a coin! So, even though it isn't a striking name, it is still this: Geo- for Geocaching Coin- Since it is ALL about the coins! Fest- Since it is going to be a really festive occasion! I hope you do make it out! Quote Link to comment

Is there another event going on? I will keep an eye on fares as the date gets closer but it may be too expensive for me. Just keep checking. This area is one of the best to fly into because within a 2 hour drive you have 5 airports you can check. Sometimes a fare way will only be into one of them, but the savings with make he extra driving time worth it. Just after the holidays the airlines often come out with something to keep us on those planes. So best thing to do, is keep your eyes and ears open. The Dallas area has always been a expensive airport to fly in and out of. But the wright amendment was repealed and it just got a almost 200.00 cheaper! Yipee! I am excited about that. Also, I was just in Orange County in July and came across a lady while at Disneyland that had this book of tickets. It had 3 days of disney, 1 San diego Zoo, 1 Seaworld and 1 universal studios. I think she paid 180.0 for it. It was a great deal. Costco was selling them, not sure if they still are. But if you are planning on a long family trip I would check it out. Quote Link to comment

I am 22, so I cannot rent a car and I dont think taxi drivers will like to hear "Take me to N** **.*** W*** **.***" IF this all goes through, is anybody thinking about setting up a carpool? I would be glad to split costs of a van for the weekend. I was thinking about just driving cross country again, however just gas prices alone are more than the airfare and hotel.
