geological life of caches

fire and flood, trees falling, casual finders, sun damage (reasons a cache won't last hundreds of years)

Small plastic caches have lips or O rings that fail, then they're not watertight. Lock and locks have tabs and a gasket. I assume both will eventually fail. I expect in practice ammo cans are the longest lasting container, except perhaps near the sea where they tend to rust rather quickly.
