+amy55407
I'm going to visit Channel Islands and Joshua Tree National Parks in November. I want to download waypoints onto my gps but not necessarily maps. So, I bought National Geographic National Park Maps for about $15 at Amazon Marketplace. It's supposed to be able to communicate with a gps but I can't get it to work or figure out why. I have a usb cable and I'm wondering if I need a usb to serial adapter. It says the interface on a garmin must be set to "garmin" but that is not an option on this Venture CX. It's either connected by usb or it's not connected. There are no other options. I've tried various com and baud settings but that doesn't work. I've shut off my palm syncing software as it said in the faqs on the website. Any ideas how to get the software to talk to the gps? Thanks. Quote Link to comment

Thanks. Amy Check the NG website for updates. They have some there for these programs. Also if that doesn't work. Try uninstalling the program and reinstalling as you might have corrupted something. It should work one way or the other... Some of the older programs will work only with a serial cable. The newer one "State Series" works with USB with the update. I haven't had any luck with an adapter myself. I tried it once. Maybe if I had bought the Garmin one. But for the price you can get the new State Series with usb and other new improvements. GPS and if you look at this compatibility chart it seems to indicate that GPS doesn't support the usb-only units. Quote Link to comment
+GOT GPS?
You can try THIS SOFTWARE, and see if that can help you. I have not tried it yet though. Quote Link to comment
+amy55407
I tried reinstalling and checked for updates but it's the same as what I have. I was hoping I would find a usb to serial cable lying around at work to try but there doesn't seem to be one. I haven't tried the software recommended yet. Maybe I'll try finding a cheap usb-serial cable on ebay. I don't want to spend a lot of money on this. It would just make sense then to get the garmin 24k for the parks in the West. Grasscatcher
I'm working with Topo 4.2.4 so it may be slightly different, but in the software go to view >preferences >receiver type...be sure you have the proper model selected......and back under preferences go to connections and be sure the USB radio button has been selected, not serial. These GPS setup selections may be under Handhelds> chg GPS settings also, I can't remember. Quote Link to comment
+Red90
You can use Garmin's free software "Spanner" to stream NMEA to a virtual COM port from the USB connection. It should do what you need and is well free. Quote Link to comment
