+DeRock & The Psychic Cacher Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 This is a sad day for the geocaching community. Another APE cache bites the dust. Our thanks to Dep&Uno&Co & 2Wheel'in for all they did to keep the legend alive. RIP Mission 7: Crab Creek (Project APE) Deane & Linda AKA: DeRock & the Psychic Cacher - Grattan MI Quote
+El Diablo Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 I know this is going to be unpopular, but from reading the cache description it seems that the original A.P.E cache was stolen. Therefore in my opinion, replacing the cache with another container (even though identical) does not make it an A.P.E cache, just a replica, or at best a memorial A.P.E cache. El Diablo Quote
+briansnat Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Its a big time bummer. I don't think the loss of the container should matter. Nobody said a thing when the cache was moved from its original location previously. If you want to get technical, it was no longer an A.P.E. cache the moment it was moved to a new location. Quote

I don't think the location is as important as to the original container. If it's an original container to me it wouldn't matter where it was placed. El Diablo Quote
+Corp Of Discovery Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 Ummmm...don't want to add to the bad news but Mission 12: Blind Canal went missing recently also..... Quote

El Diablo The original stash and the cache placed 76 feet away in 2000 are both not original containers... should we archive those too? It was a poor location for a cache to begin with so I guess it was inevitable, but someone stealing it. How sad. Quote

I also agree with you that it's sad that someone would steal these caches. El Diablo Quote

+sbell111 Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 ...can't believe this is worth getting worked up about... I disagree. It's somewhat sad anytime one of the older caches gets archived. It's worse with an APE cache because their were so few to start off with and there will never be any more (and because I never found it). Quote

+briansnat Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 There's another discussion of this topic here in the Northeast forums. But its one of general interest. If the original container was eventually replaced during routine maintenance, would the people here who feel that its not an A.P.E. cache without the original container be in favor of its archival? The fact is that the cache was no longer in its original location, the promotional materials were long gone and the original logbook was no longer in it. So from a physical standpoint it was no longer an A.P.E. cache a long time ago. As a poster in a related thread stated, the A.P.E. caches transcend their physical components. They are more than a logbook and a very big ammo box. They are a phenomenon in the geocaching world. People plan vacations around them, geocachers team up for road trips to log them, some people travel hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles to log them. I remember one geocacher who was visiting NYC who rented a car and drove the 8 round trip hours just to log one A.P.E. cache. It is a shame to lose this. I wish that the owners weren't so quick to archive the MD cache with so little input from the community. There was no harm in keeping it disabled while this was hashed out, but now that its archived there is no going back Quote
+Quiggle Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 (edited) But its one of general interest. Exactly why I left this one open. edit: I was posting a link to another thread in case someone wanted to read other viewpoints that may not be expressed in this discussion. +joefrog Posted October 6, 2006 Posted October 6, 2006 MAN, that stinks... I just don't get why this type of cache can't be kept alive, the icons are already out there! Quote
+lpyankeefan Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 MAN, that stinks... I just don't get why this type of cache can't be kept alive, the icons are already out there! Hey joefrog! I remember finding one of your coins and a joefrog marshmallow gun in this cache! The kids still LOVe that thing! Lots o' fun! Getting back to the matter at hand I find it unusual that TPTB still haven't weighed in officially on these caches. What is the official Groundspeak policy on replacing containers/logbooks/locations of caches? Currently: 1:You ARE allowed to replace containers that are a poor choice/leak/cracked/animal muggled/destroyed by car tires(YES, this has happened to me!) without archiving the cache. 2:You ARE allowed to periodically/REQUIRED to replace full/moldy/damp/animal muggled logsheets/strips/books without archiving the cache. 3:Geocaching.com DOES allow for slight variance or moving of a cache container via the change coordinates log without archiving the cache. 4:SWAG occasionally needs to be switched out (due to geo litter, dampness, etc.) without archiving the cache. What happened if you needed to do all of the above all at once? Questions for thought. What say you? Larry (lpyf) Quote
+claud4 Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 i was lucky enough to get to vist this APE just days before it went missing . im so sad to see that it's been taken and very sorry to see about it's closing. c4 (Atlanta) Quote
+DresselDragons Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was the closest APE cache to us...we were gonna hit this one when we went to DC over Thanksgiving. UGH! Quote
+CraigInCT Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Only through reading about A.P.E. caches, did I learn that this was associated with the film, Planet of the Apes. Why haven't there been other themed caches? Mission Impossible, 24, Fear Factor... Is Jeep going to be the only outside sponsored aspect of our fun? Quote
+Bud Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Sad to see this one go. We planned a whole vacation around getting this one and doing a big chunk of the Baltimore area, with friends flying in from MA and TN. Quote
