NORTH CAROLINA NEWS:

GEOCAC had over 100 submissions, with a big chunk coming from Gambrinus & Crew. A new reporting organization, "Tenth Marine Engineers", uploaded a dozen reports from the Southern Pines area.

Last week, I was contacted by the South Carolina Geodetic Survey for information our group has accumulated regarding old granite markers along the NC-SC state line. This is in preparation for an upcoming project by SCGS. Anyone in southern NC or Upper SC who has an interest in historic survey marks is welcome to contact me to explore how we can assist. (Neweyess and I have done some work on the state line, but there is much left to do!)

NATIONWIDE:

If my math is correct, GEOCAC turned in over 1,200 reports for the month. Great job, Folks! Holograph's map is looking better with each update!

Several members reported to NGS for the first time in September. Welcome! Sixteen individuals have over 100 recovery reports for the year. That's impressive, but there were some great reports from folks who went to awesome lengths to snag (or try to snag) a single disk atop a mountain! As others have said, "Numbers don't tell the whole story!"

Note how I stopped and took a breather at precisely 1,000 NGS submissions. That was my plan of course, to show you how "in control' I really am.

Congrats to PFF for staying ahead of me. I went back and put in some May submissions that I had forgotten but he still moved a bit further ahead. And Wister will soon pass me. The last 3 weekends I ended up driving over 50 miles just to get TO the first mark in my hunt, and unfamilar territory makes the hunting harder.

Congrats to PFF for staying ahead of me.

It's partially Ernmark's fault for setting up shop 40 mi to the west - otherwise it could have been 1382 & 1st place !

( I must admit, though - getting paid $1 per recovery by PFF has been quite a motivator! ;) )

Yeah, I admit that heading west has been less of an option since you came on the scene, but I wasn't overly fond of that area anyway, so you haven't done as much damage as you might think. ;) Maybe we can leapfrog years and you can report in the even ones and I can report during the odd ones!

The new recovery map show the trip I took (with long-suffering wife) through western Iowa. I got 45 logs in 13 counties from the trip, most of those counties logged for the first time by GEOCAC. And we still had time for visiting relatives on both sides of the family, Lewis and Clark related things along the Missouri River, and a music festival.

I'm planning a trip to SE Ohio this weekend. That is about 700 miles from the house. If the weather cooperates I should get over 1000 after the trip. This hobby can be rather addictive.

I just returned from a trip where I colored in three more counties here in Alabama-Autauga, Bullock and Barbour Counties. I would have done more but my traveling companion had no interest is what I was doing. If he had not been with me I probably could have easily had 20 or so more marks.

I was surprised to notice several counties within a reasonable distance of the D.C. area — homebase to several of the most active benchmarkers, including yours truly — are without any NGS GEOCAC recoveries. I made it a point to target some of them on nice daytrip yesterday, and I hope I'll have a chance to do others soon.
