Preferred size of geocoins (1.5", 1.75", ?)

Okay, this question is for the collectors out there. What's the general preferred size for geocoins? I'm assuming that the people who squirrel away coins until their mattress jingles probably have some sort of plastic sleeves or other mass-produced storage gear; are these designed for a specific diameter of coin?

Thanks in advance for any info!

Heehee! I was just concluding the same thing. I'm practically awe-struck by the notion of 3" coins, but yowsers, I sure don't want to carry a sack of 'em in my caching pack. They sound heavy!

I've decided to go with 1.5". My design is fairly simple, so it should look good on the smaller coin, and there's a better chance of it fitting into more caches. Since I live in-city, a lot of the caches I find are micros and smalls.

Thanks, everyone, for your input!

just make sure that there is some weight to the coin. I've been disappointed by some coins that turn out to be about half the thickness, and mostly zinc so they feel like they could easily be snapped in half by a 5 year old.

Now there's a good point. I believe the ones I'm ordering are 3mm... is that good enough, or should I see if they have a thicker coin?

The thickness also depends on the diameter of the coin, IMHO I think 1.5" coins should be 3.5mm thick and 2" coins should be 4mm thick.

I learned something not to long ago concerning thickness, even at 3.5mm thick on 1.5" coin if there is a lot of raised 3-D work then that takes out more metal therefore feeling lighter(so I have been told, maybe someone can clarify).

I amde the three inch coins just to get the history on the back. The manhole cover idea kind of fell into place. We originally were going to do a two inch coin, but the text was so small. On the Meades Coin it was the same thing, the text was going to be too small on a an 1.75 coin, so we went to 2". Glen

Even on a 2 inch coin, the text was pretty small. Thanks go to Glenn721 for this photo!
