Ignoring a lot of caches at once?

I know I can click on "Ignore" to stop a cache appearing in my listing, but is there anyway of doing it for one specific cacher or one specific set of caches?

I've recently had a load of motorway mayhem caches placed near me by one person and I've no intention of doing them - mainly because they don't interest me.

So is there anyway of automatically ignoring all motorway mayhem caches or all caches by this one person? They've got over 20 caches and frankly they're all rubbish (in terms of what geocaching means to me i.e. getting out into the countryside for a nice walk) so I'd like to stop them cluttering up my nearest unfound caches list.

Hmmmm...

  1. Not as far as I know
  2. It took me all of sixty seconds to work out who it is you are referring to, and I I'm really not sure that's a very nice way of rubbishing their caches. I know you qualified your statement, but IMHO the last sentence of your post adds nothing. I'm not sure how often said family visit the forums, they are not regular posters, but I hope this one escapes their notice.

It took me less than that - we have met and know the family concerned and know they would be really upset by this comment :D.

In answer to your question, I think you have to add each cache to your Ignore list individually. Should not take too long though - I'm just planning our caching for the weekend and have bookmarked 30+ caches in a matter of minutes :).

Is this a serious question, or the start of a rant about motorway mahems/ cache & dash/ etc?

I don't think there's anyway to do it, but if there's only 20 or so, it'll probably take less time to click 'ignore' on all of them than it would to start a new thread about it.

You have to do each one individually.

There is a GSAK macro for making a filter into a bookmark list (of which your ignore list is one) but you still have to confirm each one individually. This would speed up the process and you could use it to filter other types of cache you dont enjoy.

^^^^^^^ what he said :)

haven't seen them on the forums much, but would it be possible to edit the post to the salient facts? Talking of which, I don't know of any way either...

Of course, you could add this as a feature request in the geocaching.com forum and Jeremy will consider it. I'd think it might be possible to do with the tick boxes in the search results list (similar to how you can tick the boxes and download a .loc file, but have an extra box for 'ignore') although you're still only be able to tick 25 at a time.

I think in future you should choose your words more carefully. It would have been just as good to have put in the question "Can I put a number of caches into an ignore list ? "

You dont need to identify who or what, it just isnt needed. This way it wont upset a cacher thats gone to a lot of time and trouble setting out his caches. I, along with some others no doubt wont do certain caches because of whatever reasons. But there is no need for me to air my views about them specifically on this forum.

Just my 2p worth !!!!

Of course the best way to stop them cluttering up you nearest unfound pages is to go out and find them. As there's only 20 of them, and they're MM/driveby caches, it shouldn't take much longer than all that button pressing that would be required. You might even find that you do enjoy some of them after all.

Yes this is a serious question and no it isn't just the start of another rant about motorway mayhem and cache'n'dash. Nothing wrong with a cache'n'dash I've done quite a few they are quite refreshing after a 5* terrain cache. But since you bring up the point, no, driving up and down the motorway and stopping at every sodding junction doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. But as you say, that is a whole different thread.

Sure "one mans rubbish is another mans treasure". I clearly stated what "rubbish" means to me in the OP. Just because I'm not fond of them doesn't mean no one else will like them. I just wish there was a way of automating the process so that I don't have to manually keep sorting everything when creating lists of caches.

Thank you markandlynn for the information. I'll have a look at GSAK.

Can't wait to tackle the MM series! Perfectly placed to cheer me up on those long distance drives! I understand that they are not everyone cup of tea but some of them are really daring hides in areas right under the noses of muggles!! Caches like that aways make me smile :)

Well here is my tip on ignoring, it is an analogy so read carefully.

I'm a bloke, one that does not have any desire to wear women's clothes, so when I go shopping I walk straight passed Dotty P's, I do not request them to be placed out of my view, I just walk past!

In caching terms here is a translation

I am a Cacher, one who does not have any desire to do Motorway Mayhem caches, so when I go caching, I drive right past Motorway Mayhem's, I do not request them to be placed out of my view, I just drive past them.

Oh life is so simple when you accept everything exists for a reason

Are we attempting a new caching category here? :)

Funny this. I had thought of doing some MM caches at some of the junctions involved myself (and thanked the owner for saving me a job!)). Anyways, I've set about doing this particular MM set by bike. 7 down; 5 to go. Quite fun really. Not that I need much encouragement to go out on my bike. But I enjoy doing this quintessentially petrol headed 4 wheel set under my own steam :) . As with lots of MM caches, they're all 35mm film can micros. (I did get a micro coin out of one of them though! :) ). Personally I like micros but as a set of 12 I think this warrants a bonus cache of some sort.

Well said Moote, an excellent analogy :):) .

When time in the area has been short the few MM caches I've found made my day. :D

As a relatively new cacher I find this forum very useful to dip into, especially when I have a question to ask which usually gets a lightning fast, useful and courteous reply.

However, I do notice that an awful lot of the postings are by people moaning or having a pop at each other; this line being a perfect example - not very nice at all.

When I read the original posting I saw it as a genuine question by a cacher of how to do something. I don’t know how experienced they are. He/she explained why they wanted to do what they were requesting. OK, the use of the word 'rubbish' may not have been wise in retrospect but when I post a question I don't give too much thought to my language - we've too many politically correct restrictions in the outside world, please not in geocaching!

It's this petty bickering that puts me off following a line and I'm sure it does fellow cachers just looking for genuine guidance.

I know I’ve shot myself in the foot by posting this as a complaint – I’ll be the first to admit it, but wouldn’t it be great if we all got on well?

Not being derogatory about other people's caches is not "political correctness" its just good manners.

Just want to say that I am also interested in ignoring large amounts of caches at once which is why I read this posting. I'm not ignoring them because they are rubbish though but because although they are relatively close to where I live it would meen swimming the bristol channel to get to cornwal and dorset!??! Been wondering myself if it was possible and disappointed to find its not. I think this would be a great idea to add to the website though.

I think in your case, if GC.com inluded UK County and Country data, that would solve this issue, you could post your support for this here

I too wondered about this...

My "nearest" cache is allegedly 3.4 miles away - however, I'd have to swim the Mersey to do this. Since I have no desire to do this, I had to put a whole series of caches on ignore, and I wondered if I could do this any quicker way. However, it didn't exactly take ages, so now I can get on with the job in hand... caching!

Posted

cheers Moote...will do.

Although I agree it doesn't take too long anyway...but it would be a good idea...not that i don't intend ever doing the ones in cornwall and dorset...but by the time i go there I'll have them all bookmarked ready in my ignore list!! :-)

Hazel, I think you're in luck as that series has just been archived so you won't need to ignore it!

hazel, I hear they've invented this wonderful thing up there called a 'tunnel'... I'm especially familiar with it thanks to the SatNav, as you know!

When I first read the OP, I did not find it derogatory, they stated it was their opinion, and asked a sensible serious question. A also agree that the wording wasn't perfect, but it was not an attack at anybody or their caches.

I can't help feeling that this forum has become a vent for people frustartion. The slightest thing can set us off and it quicky degardes into a bicker between adults all of who have the same underlying interests.

I subscribe to a few other forums, and witness the same things happening. It is almost as though the computer screen we hide behind detatches us from the reality of what we are saying or arguing about. Would we really be saying these things if were talking in a room or at an event?

In a real world situation, it really would look like bullying or 'ganging up' when so many people all come in to say the same thing, while not helping with the original question asked.

While on the subject, personally, I have no intentions of doing any MM caches or cache and dash style caches, I prefer a walk in the countryside to get away from chaos, but I will not rule out trying some out at some point.
