Why are people anti-Jeep?

Recommended Posts

We've seen and heard of people who are anti-Jeep. If there's some offensiveness to the Jeep Challenges, we're not understanding where it is. We haven't done a Jeep Challenge, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Why would someone be anti-Jeep?

PS: Sorry if this is placed in the wrong category. We figured this was a beginner question.

It's not that I'm anti-Jeep, it's just that I'm pro-Samurai :D

But seriously, there are some people who view any motorized vehicle as 'the enemy', throw into the mix a vehicle that is not only designed to go off-road, but actually gets used that way on a regular basis, and you can see why "the Jeep Challange" may not be looked upon favourably by some.

p.s. my brother drives a TJ and my best friend has a ZJ, so yes I am actually a big fan of jeeps (except the new street-Jeeps).

I've never owned a Jeep, but I wouldn't mind having one.

As far as the Jeep TB's, I haven't heard any anti-Jeep sentiment, but this would be my guess. It's a corporate sponsorship. Advertising.

If you have a personal TB out there, and I pick it up, I'm going to be sure to take care of it, and write a log to let you know how it's doing. I picked up a green Jeep TB the other day. I tried to just log where I'd picked it up and dropped it off, but the website wouldn't allow the transfer without some written log. So, I wrote that I picked it up and dropped it off. Period. It doesn't belong to a fellow geocacher, nobody's heart and soul is riding with that TB. Who is sitting at their computer waiting to see where it goes? Nobody.

And yes, I went after it because I wanted another icon on my profile page. Not quite sure why. Going to have to examine my motivation on that one, and I'm not sure it makes me feel comfortable. I don't hate Jeeps, though.

Yup. Anti-advertising explains some of the anti-Jeep-ness. GJTBs are still better than TV commercials and tacky billboards, though.

There are people who put GJTBs on their watchlist, so as a courtesy to them, I try to treat them like any other TBs. My brother used to own a Grand Cherokee, and I've driven it on many occasions and I think off-roading with a capable vehicle is a BLAST.

As a non american I think that the so called anti jeep Tb stuff is more due to the fact that they are not open to everybody. Anyone in the lower 48 can ask for one and then, for the most part, participate in a the contest associated with them. personally I don't care but I have seen threads where people do feel a little put out by it,

Bingo! I get exposed to enough advertising in my daily life... can I please have one activity, like geocaching maybe, where it's not forced down my throat suggested that I buy some company's product?

I'm sure if you agreed to pay all the expenses for the website/staff to keep this site up and running Jeremy would drop the advertising that brings in the necessary revenue, shortly after your check clears.

You raise an interesting point. How much are the expenses? And how much comes in from advertising, membership, products, etc.? I always wondered. I hope its profitable and will continue.

Regardless, I'm all for the Jeep TB's, and I look forward to finding one some day.

I think the question should be is why is Jeep anti-Hawaiian.

Why is that the question? What's going on?

- HauntHunters

The Jeep contest is only for the lower 48 states states, Alaska and Hawaii are excluded, even though there are Geocaches and Jeep Dealerships in all 50 states. Canada and many other countries also feel left out, but Glenn doesn't live there.

Why am I anti-Jeep?

Because I trip on that dadgum lip between the floor and the door when I get in and out of one and end up falling flat on my face. A little consideration for those of us with size 13.5 boots are in order. :D

When lifted, put feet out first, then slide off the seat to the ground ... same for getting in .. sit on seat, then swing feet in.

Being from Kenosha, WI The home of Jeep, well the old home of American Motors anyway, I can relate to jeep haters. Here in Kenosha, we still have thousands of AMC cars on the raod. It has to be the only place in America with that problem. So, we all get sick of seeing them since AMC has been gone for decades! Anyway, back to the jeep. The problem with the Jeep TB's is probably the same. There are THOUSANDS of jeep TB's released every year, and frankly, I guess people get sick of seeing them too. Not to mention the comercial aspect of it. Just my two cents.

And anti-Canadian!!! :P

I thought everyone was anti-Canadian? Something about all those polar bear maulings and moose running rampant in the streets...

I kid. I love you guys up there! In a strictly plutonic way of course.

Well, for one thing, my WJ's doors haven't fallen off.

And my TJ doesn't require a snorkel to climb over rocks in the desert. :P

And I didn't have to hack off my TJs fenders and bed to clear 32s.

Back on topic, though...

Mostly I have seen people who have gotten burned bynever having access to one of the JTBs. There are only so many times you can go to a cache that says it contains a JTB, only to find it stolen (obviously by another cacher - all the other stuff is still in the hidden cache container) without getting p**sed off. It could really make you not want to go look for any other contest Jeeps out there.

Around here, groups/people get pretty(very) upset about people driving in rivers, wetlands, etc- Anti off road advocates use pictures such as this to support the claim all we do is "ruin the environment"

Snorkles are frowned upon too, since with your hood underwater, you're obviously "harming the environment"

Groups such as mrr browse the internet, looking for ammo to use against OHV users in MN.

We almost lost access to all public lands recently. We are fighting to keep our access, but it isnt easy.

As for the jeep TB, some MN cachers might be known as anti jeep. The first and second years contests- the circulation was bad, and was intenetionally derailed by many. They didnt participate this year.

I sense its the promotional aspect, or the anti advertising/commercial aspect.

I call 'em Buzz wreckers.....

Oh, and 88UpDigger.jpg

Ps- I know your not doing damage in the pic, but the point is- its still ammo for "them"

32s? :tired::laughing:  umm, no fender trimming and running 37s :tired: now, back on topic  (its all good, i love to mess with jeepers)

now, in that above pic of the samy he is on a road, the road goes through the river. we have lots of those kinds of crossings in the mountains. Normal stuff. Now, if you go off the trail and start making your own trials, thats bad. following a trail, you should be good. a lot of trails start off as logging roads also. and "ammo" for serria club Nazis is everywhere. Any offroading pic they have an issue with...

Jeep? Those aren't Jeeps.

THIS is a Jeep. 1947 Willys. All original except the seats and converted to 12V.

47willys1.jpg

Does it have the push-button starter on the floor? A friend a while back had a Willys pickup. Schweet that thing was! I hated the fact that he sold it! It had both the low end-and high-end shifters in it too...(like two gear shifts)

Nice!

Yup, it does. Right next to the gas pedal. Has the hi and lo transfer case shifters too.

It's a CJ-2A. Runs great. Doesn't use a drop of oil. Just a touch of rust on the floorboard. It's always been in a shed its entire life. I can get it up to 50 mph but that makes the old flathead really sing. 40 MPH has a nice sound and feel to it.

It's one of my retirement projects. Will get it fully restored someday.

So far, I haven't seen a bit of justification for the anti-jeep sentiments other than they "advertise" by using the jeep name on some of their bugs/caches.

I understand that geocaching is sort of a grass roots thing, but doesn't it actually make a few ppl happy that there's a corporation that's interested enough in our (though I'm new) hobby/sport/recreation? Where would our 4x4s be if the tire companies hadn't taken interest in the off-road scene. What about the companies that sponsor the special Olympics, how many companies looked at them and said, "There's a bunch of 'tards playing games". Then one day someone saw how much fun it was, and sponsored then to make it into a world wide event. (ok, my metaphors suck, but I'm sure you get the idea)

I thought maybe by now, people would realize that being anti anything was just close minded bibble-babble.

As far as 4x4 vehicles go, I've seen Samurai's that could out wheel my Jeep and seen Jeeps that could out wheel the Samurai and other rigs that could beat both. it's a never ending circle of pointlessness.

*shrug*

Maybe I just haven't been around long enough to get why there's so much animosity. So far it seems like a bunch of bandwagon jumpers regurgitating info they've picked up over time, and hating Jeep because of a few caches seems silly.

I've gotten some answers in this thread in between the photos of people's cars. The answers that I got from other forums mirrored the ones here, so I've concluded that it really must be about commercialism being the wolf in sheep's clothing. You've made an interesting point about sponsorship and how important it can be. After all, a lot of people (myself included) cannot stomach McDonald's food, but the good that they do with Ronald McDonald House is incredible. And some Event Caches have sponsors to make the event more fun for everyone. So why does the line get drawn at Jeep? I'm glad others didn't understand it, too.

And I agree with you about being anti-anti.
