Travelinmatt76
Hey, check out this survival kit you can make that fits in an altoid can. Survival Kit Quote Link to comment
BlueDeuce
That's interesting. I agree with carrying several of the items listed (but not all). The main problem is that the container itself is useless. Quote Link to comment

oldsoldier
Actually, the tin can be used as a signal mirror. And, worst case, to boil water, cook food, etc. Best tool to have though is your brain Quote Link to comment
Clan Delaney
Hmm. I've found caches made from Altoids tins that couldn't keep their logbooks dry. I think if I was going to choose a container to hold items that I'm going to trust my survival to, I'll pick something watertight. Still, I couldn't very easily boil water or signal a plane with a lock&lock. Quote Link to comment

But I would like to get myself one of those Commando Wire Saws they mention. Useful for sawing, but probably not when you are in a hurry. Quote Link to comment
gof1
Couldn't boil enough water in that thing to hydrate a rat, and I have doubts about its reflective qualities. Use a Lock-n-Lock and add a mirror and a tin af beans. Quote Link to comment
cache_test_dummies
And a portable satellite phone. Quote Link to comment
gof1
How about a generator to recharge the sat phone? Quote Link to comment
Clan Delaney
How about a generator to recharge the sat phone? No problem: all you need is a coil of wire, a bar magnet and all the time in the world. And you could probably fit it in the tin! Quote Link to comment
cache_test_dummies
How about a generator to recharge the sat phone? Not necessary to carry a generator. I could just MacGyver one out of the rest of the stuff in the survival kit. edit: Clan Delaney thought of it first. Edited August 27, 2006 by cache_test_dummies Quote Link to comment
fauxSteve
Why MacGyver anything when you can just pack MacGyver himself (Made in Brazil) in your bag and let him do all the work when you get in trouble? Not necessary to carry a generator. I could just MacGyver one out of the rest of the stuff in the survival kit. Quote Link to comment
hikergps
Neat idea, but personally I would like to trust my survival on a little more than a tin full of cheap trinkets. Quote Link to comment
Kit Fox
I use a round Altoids tin to hold my shredded Jute fiber, char cloth, and a "Hot spark" fire starter. I use a large ziploc bag for my trip wire, NATO waterproof matches, a waterproof poncho, a sharp knife, and my compass. The trip wire comes in hand for securing my Decon container caches, and it doubles as great snare wire for survival situations. Quote Link to comment
