Team Fawlty
Found this one a while ago. Any idea what it is? Cook Cty Monument Brendan Quote Link to comment
Bill93
I can't specifically identify it, but I'd say it is definitely a horizontal control point set by someone. It could be the agencies involved at Argonne Laboratory, the county, the state highway department since is close to a road, or even the railroad. I'd think from the picture it was concrete, not stone as it says in the Waymarking description. Quote Link to comment
Team Fawlty
I changed the descr to concrete. I don't know why I thought it was stone. Argonne used to be located in these woods about a half mile SSW. Brendan Quote Link to comment
+Kewaneh & Shark
It is most likely a right-of-way marker for the adjacent road/highway. The State of California DOT used similar concrete posts as right-of-way markers in the first part of the 1900's. They began to transition to underground monuments (pipes & 'T' bars) in the 40's & 50's. Similar markers were also used in my area as County Line markers. This is a marker on the County Line between Fresno & Tulare Counties in California. Hope this helps. - Kewaneh Quote Link to comment
Team Fawlty
Thanks. It is actually on a peak 50' higher than and 300' from the road on forest preserve property. The forest preserve uses standard ROW markers similar (but shorter) to the ones you showed. It has a triangle on the top surrounding a hole as though it was used for triangulation. +Shorelander
I always assumed it was a Cook-DuPage county border marker. It looks like the boundary currently follows the Des Plaines River, but maybe it didn't always. Quote Link to comment
