Anyone Received Their City Navigator V8 Update Dvd?

It might be a while. In June I ordered Version 7, when it didn't come I inquired and was told that all Version 7 orders were going to be converted to Version 8. So I supposed you are in line behind all those orders. When I inquired again, I was told it was back ordered.

I ordered a GPS 18 for my new laptop on Monday. Since I am leaving on vacation next Wednesday I ordered it direct from Garmin because their site says it comes with City Navigator v8. (A couple vendors I called said they were shipping v7). It arrived Friday, yesterday with City Select v7. I called Garmin immediately. The guy I spoke with apologized and said I would have the update no later than Tuesday morning. Must be that Garmin customer service that people rave about. My first dealings with them and if it gets here Tuesday I will be another happy Garmin customer.

I know this has been discussed before. For those interested I am running it on a new Macbook using Windows XP Pro. It works fine.

I ordered City Navigator, North America, Version 8, about a week ago from Amazon, and got it yesterday. Not an upgrade, the whole thing, to guide my new Garmin.

Frankly, I am really [DELETED] and am totally [DELETED] about the whole [DELETED] thing!

It won't open without a 25 digit secret code. When I take my 8 digit secret code from my jim dandy "MapSource® unlock certificate", and try to stick it somewhere, Garmin doesn't have an opening for it. When I beef to their support people, there is no format for a software beef, so I have to stick it in a 76CSx format hole. When I do that, the site tells me that they will get to it in a week or so. :P

I am trying hard to remember why I chose the Garmin 76CSx over the Magellan XL. It seemed like the right thing to do at the time ... Like the time when I fired a .357 three times in a crawl space. That was 1976, and my ears are still ringing. But, It seemed like the right thing to do at the time ...

I would just love to open it up, load up my 76 (not my 357) and go geocaching. But, if that 25 digit secret code doesn't get here soon, I'll just have to learn the joys of returning an apparently workable device to Amazon for the Magellan that really works.

Am I happy with Garmin? Are you [DELETED] crazy? :o

In MapSource: Utilities > Unlock Maps > Next > Check the "No I need to get a 25 character unlock code" (Select this option if you need to redeem an 8 character coupon code) > Next... Go from there, it really isn't too difficult. :D

I got the notice from Garmin about Navigator v8 but I have an upgrade DVD of City Select North America v7 that I haven't installed or registered yet (upgrade price of $50). I noticed now it's been discontinued.

I know that in the past the Navigator was under fire regarding the file sizes of the maps:

Forum Discussion of Navigator - Dec /05

I wonder if the sizes are still an issue? I can't see anything on the Garmin page that mentions that.

An interesting viewpoint in this article (albeit a bit dated now that v8 is out).

GPS Tracklog Article

MetroGuide Canada ver4 was the best bet for Canada although it's a bit dated now. I wonder if Nav 8 is any better. A HUGE gorge and river has been missed for all of City Selects so far and it's not in a remote location either. MetroGuide Canada knew it was there - and it even autoroutes.

A nice comparison chart of all the maps is available at GPS Central

I will probably upgrade to the Navigator v8 from City Select v6 but I'll be interested in your comments.

City Navigator V7 had really large segments. Some of them were as large as 25 or 30 mb each. Us fixed memory handheld users were concerned that our units were being forced into obselecence(sp?). City Select V6 and V7 had small segments, usually 1-3 mb each. Garmin responded with a bit of a compromise. City Nav V8 has segments that are smaller than they were on V7, but larger than City Select V7. IIRC, none are larger than 7 mb, and most are 4 to 5 mb each.

I am not sure what this has to do with the original topic. RTFM (read the [DELETED] manual). :D

I ordered mine the first day they were available, but I haven't seen it yet.

I was wondering if anyone else had gotten theirs?

I ordered mine a month before they were aailable. They put me on a wairting list. I got it Wensday but they said it shipped on the 27th.

I am very disappointed with how little they have fixed.

Can someone post the site to report data errors again? Maybe they will fix stuff next time. They gave me this upgrade free because I complained about them not fixing stuff I reported.

I'd like to thank all who replied to my beef about unlocking City Navigator, North America, Version 8.

Let me be more specific, discussing the Comments/Questions in a more organized manner:

C/Q1: "I am not sure what this has to do with the original topic. RTFM (read the [DELETED] manual)."

A1: I try to stay on thread, but I do have a tendancy to wander. On reading the initial post, I thought it might be useful to share the troubles I was having with CNNA ver 8.0 so that new orderers might be prepared to face the problem, and I might learn from older hands than I how to get the file open. I generally do Read The Fantastic Manual, since I used to WTFMs (Write The Fantastic Manuals) albeit for military ordnance.

C/Q2: "In MapSource: Utilities > Unlock Maps > Next > Check the "No I need to get a 25 character unlock code" (Select this option if you need to redeem an 8 character coupon code) > Next... Go from there, it really isn't too difficult."

A2: I had tried that before, and it didn't work. Specifically, I couldn't get beyond entering the 8 character code, when I clicked NEXT the screen would just hang, in a basic blank fugue. So, I tried it again. It didn't work, again.

C/Q3: "Once you get the [DELETED] maps [DELETED] unlocked, [DELETED] checkout Garmin's [DELETED] free MapSource Tutorial! It'll [DELETED] help get you going with [DELETED] how to [DELETED] work it!

[DELETED] CLICK HERE!"

A3: I had downloaded the tutorial, and watched it. It was of no help in Unlocking the 25 digit decoder ring, but it was helpful once I got the super code, entered it, and Unlocked my CNNA ver 8.0.

C/Q4: Nobody asked how I got it open, but I did, and here's how:

A4: I had followed Garmin's directions, and repeated their procedures again. They still did not work for me. I then followed the guidance from you old(er) hands. That didn't work either. So I thunk about it some more. The old hands in a forum like this are almost always right if the responses are similar. They were, but didn't work for me. Finally I realized that as a former Nautical Navigator, fair on the celestial, but good on the Loran, I had (naturally) been using Netscape Navigator as my browser. I loaded Explorer, went through the whole routine, and my file Unlocked, and I have been fooling around with it ever since. I don't think much of manufacturers who serve only Microsoft Explorer users, but I have to live with them. Better manufacturers make their web systems work for better, non-Microsoft browsers. Netscape Navigator is still my default browser.

Thanks again for the constructive responses. :)

That's good to hear, I liked the City Select sizes better, it was more useful when loading specific routes.

I guess I can compromise and get City Navigator.

I use Firefox and it works fine with that. I don't believe that "only" IE is supported for the unlock process.
