Need Help Installing Cachemate On Dell Axim X51 Pocket Pc

Recommended Posts

I recently bought the Dell Axim X51 Pocket PC and wanted to install cachemate from smittyware.com but I am having trouble installing it, it keeps saying that the program is not compatible with my computer, if anyone can help me or if you know any program that can be installed instead please let me know because I am very lost and confused about it. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I honestly dont know. We are new to this whole Pocket PC thing. We had just seen a few people who had the caches downloaded into their PPC's instead of the old way of printing them out page by page and they said that they were using cachemate to do it. So I bought my PPC so that I could do the same, yet I have no idea how to even get cachemate onto my PPC to even begin to use it.

You will need to download Cachemate to your computer. Its best to place it in the "Pocket_Pc My Documents" (that is what mine is called). Then you sync your Dell and then go to My documents on the Dell and install it onto the Dell Axim. Cachemate is not for your computer.

For your computer, I suggest GSAK.

I hope this helps, if not let me know and I will try to make it more clear.

Sharnie's advice is likely correct. Although I've never installed cachemate, I've installed many programs on my Pocket PC. Some programs are designed to be loaded to the Pocket PC and launched/installed on the Pocket PC itself. These files almost always have a .cab extension. Other files are designed to be launched from the PC with the Pocket PC docked and ready to receive the install. These are usually .exe files. In some cases, however, the .exe is a wholly contained program that is meant to be launched on the Pocket PC.

It sounds a bit confusing, but isn't too bad once you get used to it. Generally, if it won't launch on the PC, then move it over to the Pocket PC and try. If this doesn't work, then revisit the manufacturer's website and see if there are installation instructions.

Thanks to all, with your help now I have got cachemate downloaded to my PPC, but thats as far as I can go. I'm not sure how to actually use it now that it's there. I still need help getting a cache page to the PPC using the cachemate program. If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Again thanks for all the help you have already given.

Are you a premium member on gc.com? I assume that you have to have a .gpx file for cachemate to open. You, therefore, have to be a premium member, download a pocket query in .gpx form, then transfer that over to the Pocket PC for cachemate to open.

Again, I'm going to have to defer here and hopefully a cachemate user will chime in. I use GPXSonar. For GPXSonar, I simply create the query and copy over the .gpx file as described in my first paragraph.

Hi,

I use GSAK on my laptop and cachemate on my iPAQ ppc. Aftger installing GSAK to your PC, go into GC.com and configure a pocket query. Make sure you select .gpx format and have the PQ sent to your email. You will receive a zip file attachment. There is a problem with opening zipped .gpx files if you are running Windows XP on your PC. If you are, click and drag the zip file from your email to your desktop. Then open GSAK and click and drag the zip file over to it. GSAK automatically unzips the file and populates the database with all of the cache information. In GSAK, select file/export/GPX/LOC File. There should be a path showing in the "file name to create" field that leads to your PPC document folder. Click on generate and you should have it in cachemate. Open cachemate and in the upper right corner there is a dropdown menu. Select "All" and the list should come up. I had a heck of a time getting this myself but finally figured it out yesterday with help form these forums... It sound more complicated than it actuall is :)

Good Luck!

Before you do anything with the category menu, though, you'll need to get the GPX file contents into CacheMate's database. 4th toolbar button on the bottom of the list view will do that for you.

I think I have everything working now, but there is still one problem that I have found. When I get the caches into my PPC and I open them in cachemate it only shows me the co-ords, who the cache is by, the difficuly, terrain, and the container always says unknown. But that's all it will show me, I don't get the cache description or hints, so if anyone could help me figure out what I might be doing wrong it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help,

I sent what I think you wanted me to send to support@smittyware.com. If what I sent is not what you needed then you can let me know. If this was sent to the wrong place, then please let me know where you want me to send it. I appreciate your help and I hope you can help me fix this problem.

Thanks again,

The problem is that it's not a GPX file... it's LOC. That's why everything's missing. You need to be a premium member to download GPX files from this site, and if you want them for multiple caches you'll have to set up a pocket query and have the GPX file emailed to you... all you'll get from a cache listing page is an LOC file.

I'm a premium member myslef from geocaching.com, is that what you meant? So if downloading a GPX file is something that I can do myself then how do I do it from this site? Or do you mean, that I need to be a premium member from the smittyware website? Or can I even be a premium member of that site? I'm sorry if I'm confusing you, but I'm a little confused myself :D so please let me know what to do.

Thanks so much for your time and help,

What you sent me was a LOC file, not GPX. If that's what you're trying to import, then that explains your problem. Since you're a premium member, you need to either download GPX files for individual caches (not from a list page, but from a cache page), or set up a pocket query to email a GPX file to you.
