+suz55tbird Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 OK, I've been away from the forums for awhile, and I've been seeing references to controversies about GW4, but when I run a search, I get nothing. So, WHAT HAPPENED??? Quote
+horsegeeks Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 (edited) There were 7 or 8 hundred geocachers gathered together swapping stories, camping, eating and just having the time of our lives. We were treated to some of the best caching that the United States has to offer. The weather was a bit warm but beautiful with no rain to dampen the festivities. The park was gorgeous and very helpful in making the weekend the best anyone could imagine. In short Texas was very good to all of us geocachers from everywhere. +Pepper Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 better yet...take a look at the positive side of things here: Unique take on GW4, Tell your good GW4 stories Pepper Quote
+wimseyguy Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 Yup, I saw a lot more of what horsegeeks and pepper referenced. I also saw both of them there and enjoyed talking with them. I didn't see a lot of the people making noise in JV's referenced thread there though. Too bad, they missed out on a great time. Quote
+Vinny & Sue Team Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 (edited) Let's try to give the OP a fair impression of GW4. I did not attend GW4, but a number of my geofriends attended it and had a great time. And, from all reports, I hear that everyone who attended had a great time and a lot of fun, which is what an event is supposed to be all about. And, allow me, as an outside observer, to put the thread linked by JohnnyVegas in fair perspective: That thread, along with the other relevant eight or ten threads which referenced GW4, was not a criticism of GW4 itself, nor of the people who attended it, but rather addressed certain specific behaviors exhibited by a small percentage of the folks who attended GW4; those behaviors and incidents included primarily the so-called "24 hour record run" effort of Team DRR and the attempts to log pocket cache finds, archived cache finds, event cache finds and "retirement cache" finds on the geocaching.com website using a variety of games. That is all. I do not recall anyone in any of those threads cited by JohnnyVegas, except perhaps the most extreme trolls (and we ignore them anyway...), claiming that GW4 was itself bad or was a problem, nor that the people in attendance were bad or were a problem. Lastly, I know several female geocachers who attended GW4, and they all report that they had a wonderful time. And really, the ONLY comments which they had to share which were even slightly negative were the observations that GW4, even moreso than GW3 last year, started to resemble very much the famous tailgate parties at NASCAR races, namely, that at GW4 they saw lots of people drinking lots of beer and a number of women with farily large breasts walking around wearing very little clothing and showing lots of skin (yes, they report that these were GW4 atteendees and not muggles.) I do not recall any of these women claiming that either of these phenomena were "bad" or evil, but rather that they would have preferred not to have witnessed some of these behaviors! On the other hand, as one of these women pointed out to me, she felt that these behaviors, particularly the latter (i.e., skin and breasts), were rather harmless, even if it was personally irritating to her. (Gee, in hindsight, I now wish that I had gone to GW4... if only to appreciate the latter-mentioned phenomenon!) Late edit to add clarification about latter-mentioned phenomena. +briansnat Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 namely, that at GW4 they saw lots of people drinking lots of beer and a number of women with farily large breasts walking around wearing very little clothing and showing lots of skin. Well that certainly changes my mind about not going next year. Quote
+Isonzo Karst Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 (edited) The venue was a state park, the main pavilion was next to a swimming beach. There were women in bikinis, and generally people of all kinds in swim wear. Most of them were not attending GW4. Not that they wouldn't have been welcomed. Actually there were probably more bikini wearing women in the park at GW3, but there the pavilion was off the beach. WE had a lot of fun. Met a lot of people. Somehow missed the stormtroopers. Dang Nice to do the trails in the park and in the nearby preserve. Terrain much different than Florida. Tall grass prairie - wow! Edited June 26, 2006 by Isonzo Karst Quote
+R.O.B Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 I spent a day out on the prairie and down by the lake with 18 of the best cachers at GW4. 8.5 miles, 17 caches, a FTF, and a cacher hitting 1000 finds made for a great caching day. Quote

Brian, one of my female geofriends who was there told me the other day about one TB which was ahem, nestled, in a crevasse formed by skin and adipose tissue on a beautiful female attendee, and a PM from a male attendee has just confirmed the same tale. Will send you the TB link privately! Apparently there were several such TBs, pocket caches and event caches with the same type of placement. I must put GW5 on my calendar for next year! Quote

I guess I should have looked closer Quote

+suz55tbird Posted June 27, 2006 Author Posted June 27, 2006 I did read that thread from Post 2, nothing too serious there that the numbers/cheating forum threads haven't addressed, and, hey, there's nothing wrong with drinking some beer, etc., but ... I heard somewhere that a Reviewer was "let go" over something there; I thought there had to be more to it...but, I'm just being nosey and curious. Quote
