Actually, this comes up every few weeks/months. I think the last time Jeremy et al said they would basically add another letter/number - so GCZZZZ1 - and off we go again. Sure someone has the linky around here...

...Seriously, the worse that will happen is a digit will be appended to the end. Yes, many older GPS units have a 6 character limit, but the GC is just prepended to the front of the number anyway so it can be stripped for older units and added back for lookups.

It would be GC10000, not GCZZZZ1.

It would be GC10000, not GCZZZZ1.

No, it will be GC10000. Zeroes are used, but the letter O is not.

 

If you are interested, I have made an online tool that will show you the waypoints for given cache numbers and vice-versa.
