Structurae

One of the appeals of benchmarking for me is that it is a reminder of the 'invisible' infrastructure all around us.

While searching for information about a North African radio station captured and used by the allies during World War II (don't ask!), I found this Germany-based site, Structurae.de.

It aims to be an online database of various sorts of civil engineering projects: "The engineering structures included in Structurae are first and foremost those which are necessary to establish lines of communication or transport, such as bridges, tunnels, dams, etc. But Structurae is also interested in those structures in which the civil or structural engineering aspect is very significant be it through the structure itself, its construction."

The site is a project of a Nicolas Janberg, a German, who was educated at Princeton, and the Structurae is tri-lingual.

Coverage is inconsistent, based as it is on volunteer input, but is extensive nonetheless.

Worth your time to browse or to submit your favorite bridge, tunnel, or pyramid.
