+leather-man
After studying my area for the last 3 months looking for some hiding places I finally got it narrowed down to 4 locations, one for each of the ammo boxes I have ready. One trail, less than 5 miles from my house, has 2 great views from the top of a ridge. They looked like they were more than the minimum 528 feet apart so I loaded both containers in my back pack and off I went to the first lookout. The trail was much steeper than I remembered it and 1.20 miles in I arrived at the first lookout. I took a short rest and then started looking for the perfect spot which didn't take that long at all. As I took the first container out of the pack and started to write down the coordinates, I looked down and there, in my perfect spot, was a 50 cal ammo can marked GeoCaching.com. My heart dropped a beat. I opened it up looking for the GC number or name, nothing. I read the log book as it was an older cache and the last find was Nov. 2005. I figured, it was archived or something but I signed the log anyway and put it back. Went to spot number 2 and hid my first cache and yes, it was more than 528 feet. When I got home I looked up the hider's name as that was in the log. It turned out to be the last stage of a tough multi/puzzle that started 40 miles away. So, I hid one and found one. Not what I had planed but what the heck, it's out there. I'm off tomorrow to hide the other one on the other side of the valley and I hope I don't find another cache while I do this one. +wiseye
Congrates on your First hide! that's a great story. It just goes to show that you know how to find a great location. Good luck with the rest. Quote Link to comment

+dkwolf
Pretty cool story, I couldn't imagine looking for a spot to hide a cache and finding one already there. But, that might have something to do with cache density here (usually 10+ miles between them) Quote Link to comment
+leather-man
I moved up here from Nebraska so I figure the cache density is directly related to the population density. I spent some time looking at the puzzle cache I stumbled on during the hide and it's a tough one for sure. It was hidden by the same person that hid the oldest cache in NY and one of the 10 oldest in the country. Here is a Link. I sure hope mine gets approved. Quote Link to comment
Hillbilly-Rockstar
And the hider of that cache most likely though his cache was only for the experienced. HA! you showed him. Quote Link to comment
+leather-man
The first hide has been approved. I hid a couple more yesterday and the last one is just plain evil. I'm sure it would stump me for a half hour or longer and it's at the end of a pretty steep hike. I mentioned these facts in the description. I can't wait for the first to find crowd to get the notifications on these things so I can get some local feedback. Happy Caching!! Quote Link to comment
Whistler'sMama
Ha! Ha! That happened to my husband too a couple of months ago. He finds the perfect hiding spot in a trunk, moves aside some leaves, and there's a cache, the last stage of a multi cache. But it was a legitimate find and he logged his accidental find. +gof1
Happened to me a couple or so weeks back. I signed the log and moved on. Found a couple more caches and headed home. I started to log my finds only to find out the cache I had found while trying to hide one had not been published yet. Quote Link to comment
+Nels_Anderson
That's a good one! At least you got to log a find out of it. I ran into something similar on the last cache I hid. After submitting it for review, the reviewer denied it because the final of a multi-cache was too close. Of course, I could not possibly have known that since I had never tried to solve that multi. Fortunately I was able to find another suitable spot. Quote Link to comment
+BadAndy
One of my first hides was not approved until I moved it. My first choice turned out to be less than 5 feet from another (members only) cache. I didn't see it on my cache listing because I had not yet become a member. A good spot is a good spot... Quote Link to comment
