gridlox Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 Historic sign taken down on Broad Just in case the link doesn't work later, here's the highlight from the news article: ...Rome bid farewell to a downtown landmark Thursday. The Cherokee Masonic Lodge’s sign, which has hanged on Broad Street above Jefferson’s Restaurant, was removed by Trammell Welding. Removal of the sign that has been at the lodge since the 1940s or ’50s ... I've been working for the past month or so on an extensive multi that gives you a nice walking tour of some of the features of the historic district in our great city. Once you find a feature you also find some info at the site and use that to find your next waypoint, plus a clue to the coordinates of the final cache site. Unfortuntely, this was #4 of the 15 sites you need to visit to finish the tour. While not really that hard and would easily be able to be done in a few hours, the removal of this sign has totally changed the process of decifering the final coordinates. Oh well, back to the drawing board to reconfigure. Has anyone else ever had something similar happen to them? D-man Quote
+Kacky Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 No, but that is a really cool sign. In our town we have the Masonic Block, but the Masons moved to a newer building in 1975. There's also a Lithuanian Hall that was vacant for a generation and is now a mosque. And the Quakers meet in a former synagog that still has the Star of David on the front. The bad luck for you is that this sign is moveable as opposed to carved, like ours - so they were able to take it with them. Good for them, but a pain in the tuckus for you, I'm sure! Quote
+Kryten Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 I hiked five miles into a forest on an all day multi. The first clue should have been the serial number of a telegraph pole but there were none to be seen because the telecoms company had removed them and replaced the line with an underground fibre-optic link. +Tsegi Mike and Desert Viking Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 There was a nice little rose garden in a downtown area that I was planning on using for a cache. I was just waiting for some nearby construction to be completed before setting this one up. It was lovely, benches, different rose types, all labeled. A wonderful place. Then someone got the bright idea to dig it all up and put gravel there instead. I was heartbroken. Not just because a cache location was gone, but because that sweet scenic garden was replaced by ugly gravel. Quote

Not just because a cache location was gone, but because that sweet scenic garden was replaced by ugly gravel. Yeah, I had one like that too. Nice little greenspace park right downtown. Someone decided the adjoining building would make a nice restaurant. At least they had the forethought to realize the beauty of the park and planned to only create a drive "through it" to get to the parking lot behind the building. But in the process it had to be destroyed and rebuilt after the drive was cut in. Unfortunately, the company backing the build had a falling out with the contractors and the project fell through about a 1/4 way into the build. Now, instead of a nice little greenspace park, we have empty lot with a pile of dirt & gravel, overgrown weeds, and a half standing "Future Home of" 8'x4' plywood sign!! +Markwell Posted June 2, 2006 Posted June 2, 2006 (edited) There was one in Chicago where a statue was the first stage of a multi. Cache was a long-lived one. Someone stole the statue. Edited June 2, 2006 by Markwell Quote
+knitter Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 We set up an event last year with a road rally multi-cache. The morning of the event, we ran through the multi one last time to double check it, and found that the local tea room had changed the menu on their outdoor display (wires crossed - the manager had promised it wouldn't change until after the event, but the weekend manager saw differently)! They refused to allow us to have a copy of the menu so we could still use the clue somehow, and they wouldn't let us put a small sign in the display that read GEOCACHERS: and the clue. It took us quite some time to figure out a replacement (it was a very odd word we had used in a crossword puzzle) and we weren't thrilled at having to redo the two pages in the multi booklet (50 copies) we had created for the rally, that close to the actual event. +nctreker Posted June 3, 2006 Posted June 3, 2006 Dr. Fred had hidden one in this area where the statue "pointed" toward the final cache location. Unfortunately, vandals decided to amputate the statue. Quote

"How many bridges?" Duh. It's a twin bridge! The original clue was blocked from view so I came up with essentially a "gimme" until they re-open the area. That way I didn't have to come up with a new clue and revisit the area. You could also just provide the answer. Edited June 4, 2006 by Alan2 Quote
gridlox Posted June 4, 2006 Author Posted June 4, 2006 You could also just provide the answer. That's an idea. Especially since I was using info from the sign plus a cornerstone on the building (I don't think that's going anywhere any time soon!! ) How's this? Add the month + day + year in the date from the cornerstone at this location, multiply that sum by the number from the sign that "used to" hang directly overhead (It WAS 66) then subtract the total from ... Would that confuse anyone? D-man Quote
+Alan2 Posted June 4, 2006 Posted June 4, 2006 It confuses me. But then again I don't do puzzle caches. Someone else will have to answer. Quote

I figure I'm so confused all the time that the confusion cause by puzzle caches counter acts the confusion that is normal confusion thereby causing the normal confusion to reach a state of confusion that is not as confusing as normal so that I that think in a less confused state of confusion. gridlox Posted June 4, 2006 Author Posted June 4, 2006 It confuses me. But then again I don't do puzzle caches. Someone else will have to answer. Sorry. Weird thing about this one, I HATED word math problems in school. Now I'm using them to guide people from one stage to the next! OH MY GOD!!! Life has come full circle!! All thse years sitting in school saying, "Why do I need to learn this? I won't ever have to use this in REAL life!" has provided it's answer. Now if I can just figure out the whole Dangling Participle thing, my life would be complete! D-man Quote
+Isonzo Karst Posted June 4, 2006 Posted June 4, 2006 You mean, if you could ever figure the whole Dangling Participle thing out. Quote
