just got a new garmin etrex legend.dont know what one I got, I see people saying legend C and legend CX and on and on. And should I turn on the waas it is disabled right now?

What color is it? If it's blue, it's a "regular" Legend. As for WAAS, I leave it turned off because I don't see any real difference in accuracy. Other people think there is a difference, so they leave it on.

its a blue one. so its just a regular not C or CX just regular

I find that WAAS doesn't help much when I'm moving with any cover at all - it just wastes battery power searching for the signal. However, when I'm placing a cache or want as accurate a waypoint as possible I'll turn it on and let the unit sit in an open field for a bit to pick up the signal.

 

You have the exact same unit I have: a regular eTrex Legend. Fantastic unit for its price.

The "regular" legend is a great unit. Lots of cachers love them, and the Legend has found a lot of caches. The color units and "x" units are nice, but pricy. The good old blue Legend will serve you well.

 

I prefer to keep WAAS turned on. The additional battery usage isn't noticable on my 60C, and it seems to give me a little better accuracy when I am getting WAAS signals. YMMV.

A quick and definitive way to tell if it is the original Legend is to simply lift the weather resistant cover on the interface, at the top of the back side of the unit.

 

An original Legend will have four round contacts visible for the serial connection. A Legend C or CX will have tiny connector for the "mini" USB.

Thanks for all the help I have the original legend. It has the four round contacts on it. It works great for me and way better than my old magellan 315.
