New Rant About Stats....

When I began caching wayyyyyy back in 2003, I had to pore over old topo maps and (in many cases) even had to deal with maps of places where I cache that often showed most of the world in an ugly blue/grey/tan combination that had less features than a billiard ball on them. Those were the days! We cachers wayyyyy back then had to really get out there and find those caches all on our own.

NOWADAYS, the young up-and-comers can zoom in to your driveway in many parts of the planet and see if your yellow jeep is parked in the driveway or not before rushing out to claim a FTF over us oldtimers. They don't have to guess if the cache is on the left or right side of a brook, they just jump into their vehicles and off they go, heading right for the closest parking spot without any concern for where that might be. Heck some of them even have access to helicopters to get them to a site... here imagine not slogging it out on foot like we all used to do!!!!

The new GPSr maps and laptops, etc. are also ruining the way the game was meant to be played in my opinion, and I think all people using them should have their new stats deleted and/or hidden, since they were made in the post "Google-Eyed View™" phase of our game, and not in the pre "Google-Eyed View™" phase I started in. Imagine the audacity of comparing stats of caches found with such awesome technology of the modern day of post "Google-Eyed View™" to those of us who cached pre "Google-Eyed View™" :)

So, I propose a return to the roots of caching... return to the old maps, only place caches (camo-ed ammo boxes only please) in 5/5 locations, and eliminate any use of stats on our pages, since INATN™ (it's NOT about the numbers). Heck I'd say we should just use compasses and sextants, and really go back to the roots of hiding treasure... complete with the sacrifice of expendable crew members who we think might be opposed to any type of advance in our secret activity! OH and just in case some of those new cachers should want to voice their opinion on this, we'll ban or ridicule anyone who has less than 6 months of caching done, and who has less than 100 posts (not sure what my total # of posts is, but who cares... INATN™ anyway!)

If no-one will implement ny ideas, I propose banning all non-compliers from this site. Let them go start a new site where they can play their own version of the game and I'll stay here and play with... errrrrr by myself! If this last part offends the sensibilities of anyone... I'll respond with a very vituperative NEW post about intolerance on YOUR part... ;):) Since I have been here so long, have impressive stats (in my mind!) that are mostly pre "Google-Eyed View™", and have never done any type of thing while caching that might be construed as cheating, everyone has to agree with me!

By the way, if you have enough time to read through this, you really HAVE to get out more and GOOOOOOOOOOOOO CACHING!!!!!!!! :D

I'm chuckling reading your post, not in a bad way though. I'm all up for a nice stomp in the woods. One nice thing about the new technology & software (google maps don’t work well in NWPA) is that it makes finding a nice hiding spot easier.

I have used the online maps to pre scout an area, load the desired waypoints into the GPS and then I go out and see what is really out there.

I have always been a fan of topo maps - mainly of the State Game Lands, follow the little contour lines, where things get really tight - now that’s fun.

Ban them all, let the pig sort them out

OH MY GOODNESS!!! :):) You mean you can now even locate new cache hiding spots while at HOME!?!?!? Welllllll I never!!!! NOW I'll have to add banning people who hide caches from home.. this must be a really new turn in the game... "Couch-Caching™" I think I'll call it!!!!! :D

Being a newbie, I kinda like those maps! :) We have enough trouble trying to find some caches! Does that mean we have to go back to the 5 gallon bucket caches instead of the cleverly disguised fake logs and rocks? Or no micros? Wait a minute, maybe it isn't such a bad idea after all! :)

I guess you want use old GPSrs with only about 3 satellites, too.

We need to ban any cache with two or more legs.

haven't found any caches with legs. do they move around alot? :(

Why don't we shut off all maps?

save server space

allows everyone to plot the things however they want

what a great idea! :(

Hey! I thought helicaching was my idea! Everyone was supposed to wait until I became rich and got a helicopter and license before attempting such a thing. :( :(

There's a cache near me that is right near a sundial. Here is a quote from the description:

Back in the day, Before sextants, Before octants, and before Astrolabes people used to navigate by the sun. Imagine geocaching back then. "Ok guys its somewhere over here in this 25 mile radius" Have fun.

I propose truncating all coordiantes to degrees only (N 42° W 087°) and posting sundial coordinates instead. All finds using GPS without sun naviagation will be deleted, and any users bragging finding a cache with GPS will be banned.

Since I do most of my caching with my little yellow eTrex, I think we should ban all caches that are not plainly visible within the 100' circumference of error.

HAH! That'll show all those lazy people with their up-to-date, super-duper GPSr's and PDA's and instant wireless access anywhere on the planet for 24-hour porn access. .... Hah! I say.

... and can we have more sno-cone stands? I really would like more sno-cone stands. The good ones that'll make a 17-flavor suicide and not ask questions.

If someone can find your cache so easily just be looking at a 2 year old image with not so good resolution, then perhaps you are making your caches too easy. More multicaches and puzzle caches will fix that problem. I think the real problem is too many stupid thoughtless caches.

Just my 2 cents

I don't normally reply to threads, (lurker) but this one just made me laugh.

It's only natural to utilize the latest tools in any activity. Or would you prefer to use wooden sticks and leather balls when you play a round?

Anyway, you still have to get out there and find the dang thing regardless of how you determine the location. <_<

I think we should ban any posts that complain about posters who do not have enough posts if the poster does not meet their own posting requirements that they listed in their post!

I got into geocaching because it helped me get out of the house and actually do things by myself or with the family. It has worked very well lately. I use a pda with maps on it.

Big deal if someone uses a map program. They are out there enjoying the environment. Seems like some people worry too much about stats. I could care less who's the best, has the most, has found the most in certain amount of time.

Post's like this make me think what is the main purpose of geocaching.com? Stats? If it is, someone needs to open their eyes and look at the bigger picture before complaining about others stats and how they got 'em.

That's my 2 cents worth, I put a nickle in so I have one left.

Hey quit bad mouthing the yellow. I just recorded some coordinates accurate to within 50cm on my yellow eTrex (took me a while to do mind you...)

Could not have said it better myself. To me Geocaching is all about getting off of the couch. Often times a cache will take you to a city park or other interesting area that you never even knew existed. If geocaching was still relatively "low tech" (no maps etc.) then I would still be sitting on the couch.

I'd like to know what this means: "I just recorded some coordinates" and how do you know that they are accurate to within 50cm? 50cm relative to what? :drama::ninja::ninja:

That's pretty good, considering the coordinate display on the unit (i.e. DDD MM.MMM notation) is aproximately 6ft (~183cm) for 1/1000th of a minute in latitude. <_<
