New Caching Record

Recommended Posts

Boy what a weekend. I’m bushed. The first 24 hours was the hard part but then I pushed another 12 and made it 36 hours without finding or even hiding a cache.

Personally I think a lot of people are going to vie for this record and so we need to get the ground rules down. Based on other ways of finding discussed in the forums I propose these find rules for all 24 hour no find record runs.

1) If the cache finds you have to sign it. No bogus non finds. If you are at the strip club and your buddy buys you a lap dance and she has a pocket cache, your record attempt is over.

2) Moved caches count. If someone left that Iraqi cache on your table and you trip over it. You have to sign the log, and count the find. You can’t bypass moved caches.

3) Archived caches. Even if that cache is archived you have to find it. After all if it’s good enough for others, you can’t just ‘say no’.

4) No signing tricks. Anyway you sign the cache is going to count as a find. If you sign the container and not the log, It’s a find. If you forgot your pencil, bleed on it. No excuses.

5) If you inadvertently walk by where the cache used to be and the owner says you can claim the find. You found it.

6) If you find an unlisted cache and later learn it was an event only cache for an event that you didn’t attend. Tough, you have to log the event as attended to balance your finds. This will disqualify your record run.

7) If your buddy thinks you would have found the cache even though it’s not there, that’s a find. Heck since some people think a DNF happens when you leave the house and don’t get there, if your buddy thinks that had you left the house to look you would have found it, it’s a find if you move like you are heading towards your front door.

8) If you normally cache in a team and your teammate finds a cache while separated from you during the record run, it counts as a find and you are disqualified.

9) If someone moves one of your caches and you have to find it again while doing maintenance, it’s a find.

10) If you go to drop a TB in a cache you have already visited. It’s a find.

11) If you help your buddy place a cache, it’s a find.

12) If you are trying for the geocaching.com 24 hour record and you find a cache listed on another site, you have to log an archived GC.com cache and so it’s a GC.com find and you are disqualified. Vice Versa also works.

13) If you are surfing the internet or podcasting and accidentally stumble on the cyberspace cache or radio show cache...That’s a find.

14) If any of the above happen while you are asleep tough, it’s a find. If you are sleeping during #1…you don’t deserve to set a record.

That’s all I can think of. With all the way people are finding caches now it’s only going to get harder to make it 24 hours without finding a cache. So while it’s still easy I’m going to press my claim as the first person to hold the 24 hour no finds record.

That's great and all, but what if another cacher actually DELETES one of your old finds...does that make you -1 for those 36 hours?

Good question.

So looking into the all knowing forums for the answer this is what I come up with.

If you have a find deleted, that means you need to post your find in your geocaching blog and even though it was and old find, it's a fresh effort to reclaim it and you are disqualified. :(

Didn't see a time limit for back logging sooooo, since I've only been caching for a year, as of yesterday I'll claim the previous years time as non-cached,...that's 37 years of non-caching. It will be a shortly held record as the eldest ones in the group can claim all that time prior to May 3 2000 as well.

You MUST log a smiley on one of your own caches to use as a place holder for that cache which was deleted. It counts.

This thread (in spite of the excellent humor) and other recent ones have given me a whole new perspective on how people pump up their find counts. I used to rail against easy lame micros for getting more smileys. Now I see they have gone WAY beyond that. Thanks for the laughs, but I do worry about the future of our activity.

Yeah. I've been on the Stop Micro Spew campaign for a while now, but as I've stated in other threads, however "cheap" those stats are for people, at least they're LEGIT. A container was found, a logbook was signed. But these new developments...sheesh! :(

If a stripper has a pocket cache it will make me wonder where.....never mind...... :(

I recent that sterio type. Ill have you konw, theres a big difference between a stripper and a lap dancer and a table dancer. I should know cause I am in the entertainment business. Eney way, I accidentaly opened a new cache notification email. Is that a find or a DNF. ? I didnt read it so maybe it is an DNR (did not read - not Do Not Recesutate). I was wondering about that. Bye :(

Hey, RK, screw your rules. I've got the world record of wanting to find caches but not finding caches, and nothing you can do will take that away from me. Sure, you demote my new record by calling it a "caches not just visited and not vandalized" if you wish, but there it is.

I have a team. I got people on my team who are not even geocachers.

We always stay at least .5 away from each other. In fact, for a month, we managed to stay at least .5 away from any cache not belonging to us. Unfortunately, today, I was run off the road after an explosion. The sad thing is, we careened to a stop within .13 of a what turned out to be a geocache. I climbed this tower (will upload photo later) to see if I could spot a bad guy, and as I squatted I knocked over a brick and found a geocache. Who in the heck put this here? Didn't they know I had a record going?!?!?

We got the 24 hour record. Shoot, I had a personal record for actively not finding a geocache when I wanted to find a geocache of over ONE MONTH.

Plus, we are here in Iraq, and we logged DNFs in Texas.

What do you think of THEM apples, hmmm?

My coup de gras was a long concurrent streak of not placing any caches. Well, that ended today, too, when once my record of not finding a cache was shattered by some unfortunate events, I decided to place a couple of caches, too.

Alas I am ignorant in the ways of strippers, table dancers, and lap dancers and probably need education on that. To answer your question, if you read that notification email and your buddy think you could of found them if you wanted to, but you didn't actually open your front door, you are ok. If you did open your front door they are finds. It all comes down to intent.

Well hell, I didn't think my record would last long, but before you go and have your trophy made we have to finish this rules discussion. I mean simultaneous non finds on two continents may even be a different category and maybe we are both record holders.

Still I think if you are blown off the road and land on a cache, it counts as a find.

It gives you a leg up on the competition, the catch is you need a professional geochacher to verify your findless status. As a neophite you can't be expected to know all the ways of gaining finds without more than minimal effort on your part. For all you know you have already found all the caches in your area and were First To Find a few times to boot. I tell you avoiding finds is hard work!

I didn't find a cache from 4/10/1967 to 8/18/2002! :laughing::laughing:

Hmmm... My guess is that in 1967 you were swag from a temporary unlisted non event cache. As swag isn't yet a cache and because temporary unlisted non event caches are not yet claimed as finds in any way, I think you are good for that first date. However be careful, you can run afoul of the other find rules.

Well, as a newly-minted expert on "'fuzzy-logic-finds" (remember, I pioneered the art of claiming a find on a cache if you think of the cache listing page for more than 22 seconds), allow me to tell you that you are eligible to claim three finds for the cache listed in the cache notification email -- once for opening the email, once for reading it, and once for closing the email! :D:angry::angry:

As for your profession, well, that does not bother me at all. I dated an exotic dancer for a while back in 2001, and my dear friend Deb, from LA, was an exotic dancer for years; she was also a porn star for a long time in Los Angeles. In fact, she is visiting here and staying with us (in our guest room, that is, if you must ask... !) for a few days; she usually visits me each year for a day or two during her travels. And, since Deb is due to arrive here in a few minutes, my wife even made me change my bluejeans (aarrgghh!) because we are having "company" -- even though I had only worn that pair of jeans for less than 3 weeks and there wasn't even much chicken poop on them -- and then she made me change my T-shirt, even though I had been wearing it for less than five days. Sigh! Anyway, if anyone (perhaps some of the male readers) feels an irrresistible urge to know more about Deb, well, you can Google her if you must -- her stage name was "Daleena Dancer"; she is a very intelligent and beautiful woman, and she is a good friend. In fact, she has asked us to take her caching during her visit.

Oh, Exotic Dancer, ahem, after having told you all this. . . I sure hope you are not a sock puppet account for my mother! sigh!

I'll share my secret!

So far I've only turned on the GPS while laying on the couch in front of the TV!

My position never seems to change (now that I've upraded to new firmware).

Before that my position fluctuated, sometimes it showed me in the dining room, and sometimes in the kitchen!

BTW... no caches within 10 feet of my couch! <_<

What if you help your husband place a cache?? huh? I mean, gee, he placed two this weekend. I did log the bugs he put in them, but I was also along on the finds for them. He just grabbed them first *pout*

So, now can I go back and log his caches, or is that ONLY if I am trying to "break a record"???

sigh. Once again, I am glad that I don't care about stats, or competing in this activity.

This happened to me recently. I emailed the owner a complete description of the cache container and its location, and let HIM decide. He allowed it.

I wasn't satisfied with that. I went back to the cache site with appropriate retrieval tools, got it down, signed the dang log, and went home feeling much better about myself.

The question is: will your conscience let you sleep nights? Mine won't if I don't sign the bloody dang log.

Ha! New rule. If your tracklogs shows you within 20' off a cache it's a find unless you have an alibi.

Since this is for the world record we have to be strict about these things.

Hey, wait a minute. Not only was it a traditional cache, it was regular sized, too. So, God likes regular traditional regular-sized caches?

Now, a rule question. If I un-find a found cache the same day as my accidental find, then am I even? Also, if I DNFed Geowoodstock 4 from here in Iraq, does that get me extra sad faces toward my record? Can I DNF Geowoodstock multiple times, especially if I DNF all the pocket caches?

EDIT: If you think I am kidding about the DNF, then click here for the log! :(

In the modern world, going all day without being adjacent to a cache is a real accomplishment, so the record actually means something. You get these old-timers around here who were caching back before June of 2004, and they have their records where they went for a week without being anywhere near a cache and all I can do is shake my head. I'm not saying that it's strictly cheating to claim zero caches found during the pre-June 2004 period, but I think that the lack of Wally World micros at the time means that their claims are cheapened somewhat.

Now, some of you will say that I should mind my own business, and who cares if these pre-June 2004 zero ho's want to claim that they were nowhere near a cache when there were hardly any caches in existence? But I do care, and this sort of artificial numbers deflating game calls into question the accomplishments of those of us who have gotten into the game only recently. We've already seen this happening in this thread. Somebody says that they got zero caches yesterday, and then somebody else claims that they had zero caches back in May 2004. And then somebody else claims that they had zero caches back in the 50s, before the GPS satellite was even invented. And they say it like it means something! Incredible!

I had zero finds a couple of days last week, and to do that I had to sit down with GSAK for hours, plotting my route. I had to make sure that I wasn't near any active or archived caches, or near any locations where there's been an event cache. I even had to make sure I wasn't close to any points listed on Waymarking.com, just in case somebody had used the location as an old virtual or locationless cache. And then I had to avoid all these points by 528 feet, in case the caches had been moved recently and I was in danger of coming close to their previous location.

So congratulations to Renegade Knight for setting a record that actually means something. And to the rest of you who are back-dating your zero-find accomplishments to before June 2004 (the point before which the lack of Micro Spew [tm] makes low numbers immediately suspect, imho), FOR SHAME.

You need to come to North Dakota. Micro Spew or not, its dadgum easy to be miles away from a cache. You have to try to be within 528 feet of a cache. Oh @$%%, I just thought about a cache location. There goes my record attempt. Thanks alot :)

What's with all the date and time stretching stuff? Did I miss the OP's point here? I thought the record related to least number of caches found in a 24 hr. period. To beat RK's record you would have to find less than zero caches in a 24 hr. cache spasm. (that might mean hiding a few as that should get you a minus find???)

Unlike RK's rule set, the many claims here make no sense - I know a few people who have NEVER found a cache and some of them are even older than me.

Stop changing the guiderules to suit yer own agenda folks. If this goes on there will be such a proliferation of records, each with their own definition. that no one will ever again be able to say the immortal words, 'It's not about the numbers'..... We will all be setting a good half dozen records each and every day before breakfast.

RK, as far as I am concerned, you set the record and it remains yours - don't let the illigitimii get ye with that carborundum stuff.....
