ptnz
Hi we are looking to add a geocacheing class to our program this summer or property is about 36 acres so our caches would obviously not be to far apart. I was wondering which GPS unit you guys think would work for us we will be looking to buy 10 or so so the cost is a factor. I do not think we will need road maps or that sort of thing as it will be done on our property so let me know what you think any input is appreciated. Quote Link to comment

You can try e8ay for some used ones or for new the etrex would be great about 100.00 each Quote Link to comment
+Lasagna
If you're going to preload coordinates in the GPSr's, then I'd say the eTrex Legend. If your going to have them entered manually, then just the basic eTrex (Yellow) will do fine. They're good basic units which provide the firm knowledge of how to work and use a GPSr (which can then be used on other more advanced models). Quote Link to comment
Dale_Lynn
I can't suggest any specific units, but I have a few thoughts that may make life easier... If you are going to have multiple units try to get all the same brand and model number, it reduces the learning curve a lot... If units are going to be used by little fingers and big fingers and inquisitive fingers, get units that are PC connectable so you only have to build "data" file once in a software application (EasyGPS or GSAK or the likes) and if data in unit(s) gets mucked up, its easy enough to "clear" unit and reload "fresh" data. Manual entry in multiple units is going to get really time consuming and tiresome. To build initial data file take just one GPS unit to all "way points" or "caches" and record that locations coordinate (mark way point). Whey you have all way points or caches recorded take GPS back to PC and download data from GPS and use it as master file for all other units. Use "EasyGPS" or "GSAK" (or some other application) to fine tune master data file before uploading to other units. If you are looking for 10 or so units, contact some sellers and ask for discount for "bulk" sale or convince them your camp is eligible for "educational" discount... Dale Quote Link to comment

You can also upload coordinates to the yellow eTrex -- the cable is not included, but can easily be found on ebay. You only need on of them. I'd say go with the yellows. Bec Quote Link to comment

Bec I second the suggestion for the 'little Yellow'. It's a great unit for beginners, easy to use and not to expensive. We got one for our son to use and it's been going strong for 3 years now. Bec That's true ... maybe one legend (for the person leading) and 9 yellows (that way you'll get the cable you need to drive all the units with the Legend as part of the package). +Lasagna
Don't forget to purchase a cable if you're going to download coords to the yellows instead of inputting the info manually. Quote Link to comment
