rogueleader1977
People (muggles) walk by our caches every day without giving them a second glance. So the question is, what is the closest you ever came to a cache (without seeing it) before you knew about geocaching? Quote Link to comment
Robespierre
I would have no real idea, but I was in the same State! Quote Link to comment
Bill & Tammy
There happened to be a cache (our first find) that was well within a short walking distance from our home we had no idea was there before we started. On a related note, round this time of year there are always several caches around here muggled from the mushroom hunters. Quote Link to comment
demhackbardt
The closest is a bench at our library at we've sat on that had a cache attached to it! Been close to a number of others pre-geocaching too at various parks and other urban micros. Quote Link to comment
Confucius' Cat
not very when i started they were pretty scarce in the areas i frequent i do not know of any that i was near prior to learning about caching, but i have since been very close to (even found) a few that I did not know were listed. But now I LOOK Quote Link to comment
BadAndy
I was within inches of This Cache a number of times before I heard of geocaching. Quote Link to comment
Groovy Cachin' Dude!
We've bicycled up and down a path by our house many times; missing a cache by just 2' before we know about caching. Quote Link to comment
badlands
About 4 feet. Walked right by it almost every day for a year. Quote Link to comment
oldsoldier
Micro right in front of a state park building downtown, that I've either walked by or driven by every day since it was put there, and no idea. Still havent got it yet, too many muggles about. Quote Link to comment
Travelinmatt76
I was within 6 feet of GCRKNG while waiting in the drive-through line. I've driven past hundreds of them in Houston. I found out about caching at work. After I checked out the website I did a search and saw that GCP4R6 was less than a mile away. Quote Link to comment
Harry Dolphin
I can think of a few that I've driven by, a few feet off the road. Ah, but the one that got me started in this game is a few hundred feet off the trail that I maintain. I read about geocaching in the newspaper, and checked it out. Next time up on the trail, I brought along my GPS, and went for it. I had hiked within a hundred feet of it on numerous occasions. It was a great hide, and a great cache. It got me hooked. Always start off with the best. So, I blame it all on BrianSnat! Quote Link to comment
Trizumi
A year in a half. Before I was hooked into caching, turns out the staute outside of the building I work within is a virtual cache. Quote Link to comment
Dread_Pirate_Bruce
I've been within 15 feet of two of the ones I found since I started. I was also at two virtual caches. Quote Link to comment
JakeBond
I used to work about 50' from my first find. more than that, i remember having coffee about 5' away... Bryant Park Micro for those NYC cachers out there... Quote Link to comment
nctreker
We were vacationing in the Lancaster PA area a couple of years ago and decided to tour an old pretzel factory. After the tour we got back in the car and fired up the GPS. Nearest cache, 70 feet. Right at the front door of the pretzel factory. Quote Link to comment
briansnat
There is a park near my house that I pass nearly every day. When I fist got my GPS, I checked GC.Com and saw there was a cache there. It was my first find. I probably passed within a mile of it every day for a few months and never knew. Quote Link to comment
wimseyguy
I was right on top of the location of The Falls hundreds of times before I learned of geocaching. Of course this all took place several (OK about 30) years before geocaching and the cache even existed. It's hidden in the woods about a half-mile from the house I grew up in. We used to play in those woods all the time. My wife says that acting like little boys playing in the woods all over again is part of the attraction of caching. Finding this one 2 years ago brought back lots of great memories. To really answer the OP, probably not very. I've changed my outdoors recreational behavior a lot since I began caching. A walk in the woods used to be down the right side of the fairway looking for a sliced drive. I've been places I would never have visited if not for a cache hidden there. Quote Link to comment
vagabond
I had to drive about 60 miles round trip for my first 2 caches, and had to do about a 3 hour round trip hike. Of course if I'd checked the local maps I could have cut the hike down to maybe an hour, its a good idea to check area maps, sometimes suggested parking isn't the closest parking. +Team_Talisman
I found two caches one day while mushrooming, it was 6 months later till I found out about caching... And am hooked now, waiting for snow to melt to go refind those two..... Quote Link to comment
Geckolovers
Urban multi cache. First stage is located about 18 inches from the door of the hair salon I frequent. I now taunt my hair stylist (who is very interested in geo-caching and likes to hear my stories) about how close it is. I also discovered that the huge plate glass windows in the "color area" are great for seeing how your highlights came out in true light, but demand much stealth when trying to hit the cache! +Driver Carries Cache
When I joined up and punched in my coordinates and found a cache about 100ft from my location! When I'm standing at my kitchen sink I can see its location out my kitchen window! I'm just finishing reading the manual that came with my brand new GPSr then I will make my first official find by taking a quick walk around the block So when you snag the cache... wave! madmike (Driver Carries Cache) Quote Link to comment
Team JSAM
Close very close there is one by a bridge that I have went to many times must have parked 10 feet from it 4 or 5 times there is a walking trail along the canyon and has 3 or 4 caches and walked within a few feet of them (mostly micros) prior to caching. +Totem Clan
About two weeks before we started caching, I sit on a bench in the exact stop with a micro hidden on the bottom of the bench. That cache just happened to be the fourth find of us. Also one of our favorite spots to go for a short walk was a boardwalk at a marsh not too far from home. We had walked down this boardwalk countless times. We later cached on that same place. Many, many times we had been within a foot or two of it Quote Link to comment
Renegade Knight
There were so few caches when I started that I never did get Deja Vu when I went caching from having been there before. At least not from an existing cache. Now there are so many I do find them in places I've been but they are new caches. Quote Link to comment
jasond
I've walked within a couple of feet of GCN52G and GCN541 for the past 3 years on the way to class. Quote Link to comment
