+sawblade5 Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 I am looking to get City Navigator for my new Garmin ETREX Legend CX coming. I bought MetroGuide because I couldn't tell the difference but the difference was to big. I couldn't navigate with my GPS with MetroGuide. Now I have a few Questions about ti I have heard that If I buy version 7 now I would be stuck with it with out the free update with Version 8 coming out in a few days. Is This True? What is Versions 8s Release date? What do I do with my MetroGuide that I bought brand new? Thanks Quote

If you buy V7 and unlock it prior to the "release date" of V8, you will have to pay for the upgrade. The upgrade cost is usually $75, but if you are close, you should call tech support and they will usually give you a discount. If you go ahead and buy v7, but do not unlock it until after the release date, you will still be entitled to a free upgrade to V8. The release date is the key--it is whatever date they say it is (usually 2 to 4 weeks prior to the ship date). Garmin has not announced a release date for V8. As far as your Metroguide, Have you tried returning it to the store you bought it? If that does not work, you could try selling it here on the Garage sale section, or on E-bay. Quote

I did talk to Garmin and they told me the same thing except they told me not the buy the software yet until Version 8 is released. So I would think If I bought it and the new version hasn't been relased yet I would still have to pay for the upgrade even though I didn't unlock it yet. Quote
+briansnat Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 What do I do with my MetroGuide that I bought brand new? See if you can trade with someone who has Mapsource Topo. That way you can run Topo and City Navigator on your unit and have the best of both worlds. Quote
+sawblade5 Posted May 18, 2006 Author Posted May 18, 2006 I have one more question Can my new Garmin Etrex Legend CX work with any micro SD cards? Are the micro SD cards single write or can I change data on them? Quote
+ejnewman Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 Any microSD card 512 MB or smaller should be fine. I've seen a few people mention ordering 1GB ones but haven't heard for sure that they work yet. Even if they don't, Garmin could fix it with a firmware update if they chose to. You can write to them as many times as you want. Well, actually, you can't. They have a lifetime of maybe something like 100,000 or more write cycles, which you will probably never run up against in a GPSr. By the time you get to that point the card and the GPSr will be hopelessly obsolete anyway.
