sudamar
I have a new 60csx and it came wtih v2.50 Should I download the the newer 2.70? Is it a good idea to always download the latest versions of firmware/software for gps's? Any reasons not to update? Thanks Quote Link to comment
+S&G.Davison
IMO yes Upgrade .. Always worth it .. However I always try and find and then keep old versions of code for my units .. just in case I want to go back 2.62 beta is here http://www.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=1277 2.7 is here http://www.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=1245 Other versions can be found here http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/gps60/ That page includes 2.5 .. so I'd say go get 2.5 and 2.7 .. load up 2.7 and if there is something you dont like go back :-) Quote Link to comment

Thanks I'd be comfortable downloading the latest non-beta firmware version (eg: 2.70). If you have a problem, you can always install an older firmware version, anyway. GeoBC Quote Link to comment
-Oz-
Making sure you run web updater twice. The first time will install firmware v 2.70, the second time will upgrade the gps software to 2.50. Quote Link to comment

Any information to make this easier will be appreciated. Thanks. Quote Link to comment
GeoBobC
Is there any other way to get the 2.50 software, other than the web updater? I can't get it to connect properly. Quote Link to comment
+oldsoldier
Has anyone had any probs with 2.70? I just DLed it...and now am kinda worried. I havent even had a chance to use my 60cx yet!! Quote Link to comment

It's getting harder to keep up with the firmware changes... They just made a 2.71 Beta version available! Anyway, I've been running 2.70 for a day or so. It seems to take a bit longer (not much) to acquire satellites after a cold start, but otherwise I haven't noticed any problems. --Larry Quote Link to comment

OK, I did just that. But what exactly is the difference between the two? I was under the impression that "upgrading firmware" usually meant "upgrading unit software" (= GPS software?) but obviously not then it comes to Garmin-gadgets. Quote Link to comment
-Oz-
The 2.70 firmware was garmin's end of the deal. The 2.50 is SIRF's end of the system. The 2.50 fixed a bug where the gps couldnt regain signal after going through a tunnel. 2.70 fixed bugs such as elevation problems. In your analogy "unit software" would be Garmin's OS and "GPS software" is SIRF's data. It's getting harder to keep up with the firmware changes... They just made a 2.71 Beta version available! This firmware took the fixes from 2.7 and added the features from 2.62 (plus one). I don't think it'll happen that often. Edited May 12, 2006 by -Oz- Quote Link to comment

-Oz-
Which, a source for why its SIRF's end or that it fixed the bug. If it's the bug fix its in some forum thread (about the upgrade to 2.50). Edited May 13, 2006 by -Oz- Quote Link to comment
Neo_Geo
The 2.50 fixed a bug where the gps couldnt regain signal after going through a tunnel. It didn't fix my 60Cx. Mine still fails the "tunnel test" (Firmware 2.70, GPS SW 2.50)! Quote Link to comment
-Oz-
okay, that sucks. I got that info from the thread talking about how to upgrade this (which i can't find at the moment). Regretably I don't have any tunnels here in arizona so I can't test it. Quote Link to comment
Neo_Geo
Incidentally, I must say I'm a bit disappointed with the 2.70/2.50 combination! My 60Cx had a horrible time acquiring signals in the urban canyons of Washington, DC. I liken it to the performance of the 60C (which I replaced partly for the "better" SiRF performance). Once it gets a lock, it still holds it waaaaay better than the old 60C, but acquisition is painfully slow! Often times I would actually have to STOP WALKING to let it get a lock. ...and this is AFTER baking in an open sky for 20 minutes for a good almanac download! Am I the only one, or does anybody else notice the same? Edited May 13, 2006 by Neo_Geo Quote Link to comment

Am I the only one, or does anybody else notice the same? It definitely takes longer to get a lock with this combo-- I noticed it right away. Not quite as bad as you describe but not nearly as good as it used to be (it was almost instant). I baked mine for 20 minutes as well.... Quote Link to comment
-Oz-
Yeah, i noticed this too. Its gonna really piss me off. Quote Link to comment
gradinka
hmmm, same with me. If I stop it acqures everything farily quickly, and then all is OK. But if I walk - it won't Quote Link to comment

Anybody could do the tunnel test, all you have to do, is stick the GPS in the fridge for 10 minutes laying on a shelf, with it turned on, then take it back out of the fridge to see if it re-acquires a signal.
