That's a United States Engineer Department (type I) disk.

You can see it an the other types in this excellent list maintained by BuckBrooke.

Thanks all for the quick reply. I have a friend who is on a land trust coservatory group that found it and were curious about the significance of it on the land. Thanks again.

I haven't bothered with those USACE ones out here, since they are 95% not in the NGS database. But if BuckBrooke wants them for the marker agency collection, I think I know where there are some Los Angles District ones out here. Your wish is my command. Maybe after work today. I was looking for somewhere to go hiking 2 - 3 miles anyway......

What is the "U.S. Engineer Department," anyway? I thought maybe it was the precursor of the Army Corps of Engineers, but according to their website, the latter was created in 1779, and I think we can safely say that this disk wasn't monumented before that...There are a couple of references to an Engineer Department on the ACE's history page, but it's never explained.

Buckbrooke:

Of course I don't HAVE to, I WANTED to! Had a very nice 4 mile walk after work, gorgeous 70-ish weather, but no joy on the older ACE markers. The USACE markers at the dam dam (Carbon Canyon Dam, in Brea, CA) were too new. I haven't compared them exactly yet, but I'm fairly sure they are newer types, that are probably already on your list. If not. will advise. Thanks for the good excuse!
