On A Nelson - Suggestions For A Nelsonian Tour

Recommended Posts

We are three quarters of the way through our Nelson's County series so with our next cache being our 111th (see NC4 A Nelson for an explanation) we thought we would celebrate by going on a Grand Tour of other Nelson linked caches in the British Isles. With a window of opportunity between now and the 21st of May our plan is to go on a Nelsonian hunt and in a true Nelson Spirit help the cache hiders to Tap the Admiral with some Nelson's Revenge, we are saving a special bottle of Nelson's Blood for the FTF NC12 Tapping the Admiral. Our list is rather short at the moment but before stocking up on Grog and delivering it round the country we are looking for other names to add to our list:

The Full Nelson (Hampshire) by paul_and_judith

Never at Sea - The Nelson by JollyJax

The Kiwi Coin Exchange 1 - Nelson by KiwiGary - we'll give KiwiGary this one after all Vancouver another Norfolkman sailed with Capt Cook

Nelson's Other Column (Northumberland) by Moss trooper - may be archived but too good to miss

The Dear Green Place by limplil

Helges Hole by thunderbird30

Stiffy By The Liffey by Donnacha - on our list even though Nelson was Irelands first man in space, this one may have to wait though

Our apologies to m0sgb, LollyBob, gisaclue, pikeymic, Bracknell Basebalers, JJ & MEGA and the claret one/the dragon lady and any other Colne Valley cachers, but after all you drove them out for their presbyterian views in the 1540s so Lancashire's loss was Norfolk's gain; but if baken cares to get in touch we might be willing to give him a plug.

So we are looking for any explicitly Nelsonian caches, no use being close to or in a place where, oh and visits to Sicily, Barbados, Montreal and Gibraltar are on the cards but will have to wait till the kids (including Boba) leave home.

And before anyone asks we are planning a Tupperbare Cache - Norfolk Au Naturelle but look elsewhere for details.

Try this one, Padworth's Cash Cache 2 by padworth. Although nothing to sugest Nelson in the title, it sits right beside Nelsons Column (the other one) and is a nice easy find in a lovely scenic location.

And about 1/4 mile away is "Cache Bang Wallop", which is set in and around Fort Nelson, on the top of Portsdown Hill, overlooking Portsmouth.

A little ferry across the sea takes you to the Isle of Man, still in the British Isles but not in UK. CC#1 has a cache called Manxmen at Trafalger GCNQOG. Reason for this connection is because many Manxmen served in ships at the Battle of Trafalger the most famous being Captain Quillim who was actually driving the VICTORY at the battle! He lived in Castletown Square , Isle of Man and the house he lived in has a plaque on the wall. Unfortunatly the house is in desperate need of repair. Recently, to honour him though a very nice statue has been placed in Castle Rushan grounds, I was there at the unveiling last year and all the names of the manxmen who served on the ships was read out and a short service held in memory of them. Mark and Lynn have a holiday meet this July on the Isle of man GCRITN.

Just an update on our plan to visit every explicitly Nelsonian cache in the British Isles, and a thank you to both the cache owners and anyone who has highlighted any Nelson caches we've missed. Its been great fun so far touring the country with Lady Hamilton TB and dropping and in a true Nelson Spirit help the cache owners to Tap the Admiral with some Nelson's Revenge. So far we've made it to:

  1. The Full Nelson (Hampshire) by paul_and_judith
  2. Never at Sea - The Nelson by JollyJax
  3. The Kiwi Coin Exchange 1 - Nelson by KiwiGary
  4. Trafalgar: 200 Years On by The Smileys
  5. The Dear Green Place by limpylil
  6. Helges Hole by thunderbird30
  7. The Wirral Pub Crawl Series 1 The Wheatsheaf Ness by Sandiway Searchers (Lady Hamilton's birthplace)

Does any have a way of contacting The Smileys as I've been emailing them for 3 weeks now with no success, so probably someone else has been supping their surprise instead.

Have had to discard all the suggestions around Portsmouth as none of them make any mention of Nelson so that leaves the following caches still on the To Do List:

  1. Breakfast with Emma and Horatio by The Flying Boots - near Monmouth
  2. Manxmen at Trafalgar by CC#1 - Isle of Man
  3. Stiffy By The Liffey by Donnacha - Dublin city centre
  4. Trafalgar Way Number One Cache by Sir Lose-a-lot - in Cornwall
  5. Trafalgar Way Number Two Cache by Sir Lose-a-lot - in Cornwall
  6. Trafalgar Way Number Three Cache by Sir Lose-a-lot - in Cornwall
  7. Trafalgar Way Number Four Cache by Sir Lose-a-lot - in Cornwall, been muggled but why not visit.
  8. What A Pickle!! by JollyJax - technically we have visited this one but see the cache description for the unexpurgated sad tail of overnight caching and embarrassing mistakes.
  9. What Folly! by kernow krawlers - near Carmarthen

These last few may take a little longer to polish off and it looks like Sir Lose-a-Lot is in for a pleasant surprise. And if you know of a missing Nelson cache we're still open for suggestions.

The Traflalgar way caches were created for the 200th anniversary to commemorate the route that the news of the battle took through Cornwall. I've done a couple of them and I am sure I read somewhere that they are not being maintained if there are problems
