Photography Geocaches?

As a photographer, I find geocaching to be an AMAZING outlet, and gives me the opportunity to tour the countryside and discover new areas and find new material for me to shoot. (with a camera, just so we're clear, lol)

I was thinking today, if anyone has ever tried to incorperate photography and geocaching into a single cache "event", where in lieu of an actual cache, you'd be provided with coordinates (or several coordinates that would define a "boundary") and the object would be to take a photograph of something within that area which would then be submitted to geocaching.com and judged by fellow cachers to determine a winner? Or perhaps to be chosen by the geocache owner. (Or whoever listed the geocache)

I know there's a few flaws in the idea (like time limits) and what not, but... it might be an interesting spin that could cater to the photographer geocachers out there.

I dunno. Just a thought.

Edited to add: Some of the photos I've taken while out Geocaching can be seen here.

I think that would be a really neat idea for an event (or an activity at a GC event). And who needs a "winner"? Just collect all of the photos and add them to the cache log or another hosting site.

It would be just like the "day in the life of" photography events/books that I've seen done. Hope you don't mind, but I may borrow this idea!!!

Well, maybe the "winner" would be awarded a geocache comprised of several above standard items, or perhaps be given several caches to dispense? I'm not sure, but there's got to be a neat way to "reward" the best photo? Or better yet, all the images could be shown in a public gallery or event to showcase the sport to the general public! (I know it was the image galleries that really made geoching look like great fun the first time I ever checked out the website.)

We have something like that here in Arizona.

Photograph Arizona

A specific co-ordinate is specified. To claim a find you need to post photographic proof that you were at that spot. A series of photos, showing the terrain, scenic views, and at least one with your GPSr displaying the correct numbers. The 'finder' then gets to specify the new location to be visited. As it is it's a virtual, so you can't duplicate the idea, but there may be a way to incorporate the concept into a physical cache.

There's a local cache that is sort of along those lines, though not quite the same. Reservoir CD Trader: It's a mystery cache; the only clue is the picture on the cover of a certain CD. You have to find the vantage point from which the picture was taken and then calculate the cache coordinates with offset values provided. As a bonus, the hider encourages finders to try to stand in the exact same spot and take a picture as close to that on the CD cover as possible; the closest match is shown on the cache page (all others can be seen in the cache page's gallery). I think that something like that -- just showing the winning picture on the cache page and saying "This one is the best" may be enough of a "reward." (It would be for me! :anitongue: )

I shoot pictures for a friend's event every year including a group shot of the attendees. We don't post them anywhere but I have emailed the group shot to people that wanted a copy.
