It may be a "kiln god", it is tradition when fireing ceramics and such to construct a figure or face out of material and fire it with your works to "watch over" them and protect them from breakage. I swear this is true i have taken several ceramics classes, some from a devote cathelic and even HE refuses to fire without constructing one. I would ask a mason if your really wondering....you know what then again it may be just a brick layer screwing around.

As a member of the military I have visited a few other peoples backyards. I have seen similar designs in stone work in Europe. If I were to guess I would say it was a descrete form of gargoyle. To be sure you could send the photo to an expert in related fields, a museum, or architect. good luck finding your answer, and feel free to let me know the outcome you have my curiosity.
