Help Needed In Purchase Of Handheld Gps

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

A few months ago I stumbled upon the world of Geocaching while doing some research online, I am a Police Officer/Security Specialist. I have been working in the New Orleans area and on my off time have been playing around with my Laptop and GPS that I have on it , I have ben able to get in the area of some Cach locations and have ben able to find a couple sites but I have also not found more due to my limits with my current non-handheld gps, I am looking for info on some of the top of line GPS that I can use for Geocaching, and also for my Security and Police work . Something that I can download waypoints onwith best possible viewing of maps.

thank you,

The best GPSr you can get right now is, IMHO, the Garmin GPSMap 60CSx or the GPSMap 76CSx. They are rugged for outdoor Geocaching use, but can also auto-route you around streets and highways.

This place has some of the best prices I have seen. The 60CSx is selling for $409.00 now. If you email them, they might have a better deal.

On top of that you will need to buy the City Select maps and an automount and cigarette-lighter adapter. I have seen those packages for around $145.00.

If you want a combo pack, gpsdiscount.com is great.

60cx with autonav kit is$488

and

60csx with autonav kit is $539

fwiw I got the cx package above (without sensors) and have for the most part no problems caching. I carry a $10 silva, but never need it. The compass on the gps would be nice since you still get a bearing to the cache when you stop, but if I stop, I note my direction before I turn so I know where the gps last bearing is still good).

the autonav is NICE, and I find I use it a lot more than I expected.

Lake powell has some great prices for just the gps. I just took a look. WOW!

You really do not need a top of the line GPS for caching

He basically wants to do it right the first time. :)

The 60C(S)x would be a fine selection IMHO!

I do know that there are good GPS at lower prices but like all things you get what you pay for, I do not mind paying more for something that will be used alot. I have in the past bought lower priced items to save a little only to have that item not last. please keep the help comming.

thanks

I started with the monochrome Garmin Vista, which I liked alot until I saw how my friend's Map 60CS could autoroute us around town, so I upgraded to the Vista C. Now I'm considering another upgrade . . .

When you get your new GPSr, you will probably want to get one of these. It has protected the screen of my GPSr very well.
