endlessmtnlady Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 Hello all, I'm going to Battery Park, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island in May. Does anyone know if there is a cache in this area. I will not have a car to travel very far. We are coming by bus. Please let me know if there is one in this area. Thanks Endlessmtnlady Quote
+Perfect Tommy Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 Search zip code 10004. To my knowledge, there are no geocaches on Liberty or Ellis Islands - they're federal parks. There are some caches on the Jersey side though. Quote
+briansnat Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 In addition to the one PT linked to, this one is also within walking distance from Ellis Island. Quote
ImpalaBob Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 FYIW The line to get on the ferry can be quite lengthy .... check the line before buying your tickets as they are not refundable. ImpalaBob Quote
+Waterboy Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 Problem – There are boats going to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island from two locations. One boat is from Jersey, the other from Battery Park on the New York City side. Since you say you are going to Battery Park, the caches that Perfect Tommy and Briansnat mention are not in walking distance. Quote

There is a pedestrian bridge from Ellis Island to the Jersey shore (or at least there was at one time)l. Quote
endlessmtnlady Posted April 10, 2006 Author Posted April 10, 2006 Thank you eneveryone for replying. You know I'm not really sure if we are leaving from Battery Park or New York City area. I did print out the one that you suggested just in case we are leaving from there. Again, thanks for everyone's help. Quote
+avroair Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 If memory serves me correctly, the ferry service originates from Battery Park, New York City or from Liberty State Park, Jersey City --- both going to the Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty. If you are going via NYC, you would have to take one to the island then another to New Jersey --- this is doable but takes more time. Quote
+blackjack65 Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 Actually they are from Ellis Island. There is a pedestrian bridge from Ellis Island to the Jersey shore (or at least there was at one time)l. There is now a land bridge that connects Ellis Island with Jersey City, although visitors must travel by ferry. Quote
bigpix Posted April 14, 2006 Posted April 14, 2006 In addition to the one PT linked to, this one is also within walking distance from Ellis Island. Walking distance at low tide I hope. There is a bridge on the Jersey side to Ellis Island but that is for service vehicles only. High security is the watch word. Quote
+lightnsound Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 FYI- There is quite an extensive security check before you board the ferry. Pretty much the same as boarding a plane. Be sure to leave your pocket knife in the hotel, otherwise it'll be a hassle. Quote
+Mile Runner Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 i thought they didnt even let people go to the statue of liberty anymore, i think you may just be able to look at it from the ferry .....to be honest i am a native new yorker and i never went to it as a youngin' and now i dont think i whill ever be able too. +Harry Dolphin Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 We visited Lady Liberty in October 04. I had a travel bug who wanted to visit, and I hadn't been there in twenty years! Arnold Zeffel at the Statue of Liberty Security to get on the ferry is worse than airport security. Most people were getting frisked. We had to stay on the island an extra hour because of security concerns at Liberty State Park (unattended package). They let a limited number of people into the base of the statue. No one is allowed up into the statue anymore. (Hmm... When my father was a kid, they let him climb the ladder up into the torch! But that was almost a century ago.) She's a great lady, and well worth the visit. Quote
