Sunday April 30, 2006. North along Rte 9W and the Palisades. (Logging these first so our co-hunter can log them too.)

Spent five hours benchmarking between Sparta, IL; Perryville, MO and North of Cape Girardeau, MO. 14 BM's no longer in existence; didn't find five; seven either not old enough or were landmarks (spire, watertower); five FTF's!!! []

Finds for Saturday 4/29. We took a trip into the city for some benchmarks and caches. We've done all the caches on Manhattan, and two new ones popped up... B)

Curious. It seems that when NJGS reports "CONSIDERABLE IMPROVEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE AREA SINCE THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION." on 2/20/1992, and logs a DNF, that there is a very good chance that the mark is right where it should be.

Today I worked my way on foot across the south Bronx along Bruckner Boulevard from Castle Hill Avenue to Willis Avenue, about 5 miles. It was at times pleasantly residential and at times rather gritty industrial. I found about half my targets, including 3 FTFs (plus another FTF for this contest) and one of the original NY City bench Marks from 1909 (KU1002), so it was not a bad day.

For the last one, I said in my log "Although the disk is badly battered and heavily painted, the description is absolutely right on and a closeup of the disk shows the "T" and the "8" of the designation "T 338", so the identity of this station is unquestionable."

Hopefully, the judges will agree.

Yesterday I spent a long day in Queens, NY. I walked the "341" level line, surveyed in 1952 from "A 341" in Bayside to "K 341" at the Whitestone Expressway, with a side trip around Fort Totten and a little extra jaunt in Flushing. It was about 12 miles on foot and I was exhausted by the end. But I found 8 marks out of 14 plus 2 not on GC, which is pretty good.

Many of these marks had a heavy coat of paint but the stamping can be made out with a bit of effort. I have provided closeups with outlines added to show where and what the stamping was and hopefully the judges will be happy with that.

But KU1121 may be pushing the envelope, but hey, there's no harm in trying.

Note, on the last one the stamping is hard to make out in the photos. I took about 20 shots trying to get a good one. It's very faint, and I can make it out in person, but I think only the "S 1" of "S 156" is visable. If the scorekeepers have questions let me know, I may be doing a charcoal rubbing for other reasons...

I'm terrible at this :) , spent 3 hours with both sons and only have 1 cache and 2 benchmarks :D ...I guess the time I spent with the kids is the biggest plus :D , but next time, better planning for benchmarks that are more than likely still around :D rather than just going to 100+ year old marks that have not been seen in over 100 years :D .

Well, here are the two

Naw, Kidatheart. We had a great time looking for benchmarks on the old CNJ line through Washington Twp, NJ. Of course, we only found three, and holograph had already found two of those. The Columbia Pipeline seems to have destroyed all the culverts and concrete posts. Oh, well. We did get one FTF (or is it 2/3 of an FTF since only 2/3 of the disk remains?) We had a great time, even if we only got four points...

Where do I start? Yesterday day turned interesting and QUITE aggravating at the same time. I went off to find RZ1881 it is oldest in county marked with an X in a rock and a FTF

what I found after driving 30 miles is a a bronze disk stamped WHITE 1945  after getting home and some research later i found another entry for white RZ1659. In the description it said they put the disk in the EXACT spot of the X as listed in RZ1881

I logged both with a reference on RZ1881 to RZ1659. my question to the judges is what will happen with this? Do I get a FTF and oldest in county for RZ1881 considering the PID# etc. is still listed, then what about RZ1659. One location TWO entries for a benchmark what to do :D
