+Treasure Hunting Family
I have seen a few cache descriptions that say something like.....The cache is hidden in the ROW. I have looked at all the FAQs and acronym files but can't find what ROW means. Someone please help. Quote Link to comment
+The Leprechauns
Most likely, "Right of Way." The strip of land alongside a road that is reserved for highway department use, or the strip of land over which utility wires, pipelines, or railroad tracks can pass. Generally speaking, Rights of Way are one of my least favorite places to find a cache. Just because a landowner has granted a right of way to the power company does not mean they've necessarily given permission for someone to hide or find a geocache there. Does "Right of Way" make sense in the context of the cache pages or logs that you were reading? Quote Link to comment

Hmm Yeah that might make sense. I haven't searched for one of these yet but I plan on one tomorrow. So I guess I will have to check and see. Thank you very much for your help. Quote Link to comment
+dkwolf
To expand a little further, generally what's included in a road ROW is the roadway and ditches. In rural Iowa, you can pretty much bet there will be a fence at the edge of the ROW, or if not, once you leave the ROW you will be standing in a field. As a GENERAL rule, gravel roads USUALLY have a 33' right-of-way (33' each direction from the centerline of the road) Some paved roads have 33', others 40'. Higher traffic paved roads may have 60' or 100' right-of-ways. Around here, on rural highways, there will be signs placed every so often demarking the right-of-way; it's a white sign with vertical ROW letters. As for power/utility lines, generally the ROW either is defined as the land directly underneath the outside spread of utility wires, or a given distance from the centerline of the poles--enough to get machinery in there to do maintenance. Thanks for saying this! Quote Link to comment
