+RuberyBlue Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 I'm planning to spend a few days in the Lake District this Easter (first timer) and would like a little inside knowledge on what would be the best caches to go for and still get my walks with a view. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Keep right on! RuberyBlue Quote
lakeuk Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 Short walk to good views :- GC7E4F Scout Scar Mushroom (a load of nearby caches can also be done from here) GCJTMT The Three Shires Stone GC45BA Jet's Valley GCK5H2 SURPRISE VIEW Quote

(oh, and yes - definitely a surprise!) Quote
Helen in Mustardland Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 It has to be the Quest for the Ring of Power if it's back up and running! (I still wear the particular Ring of Power i got from the final cache every day. Haven't quite taken over the whole of Middle Earth yet but i'm working on it!) Quote
+Bambi&Thumper Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 GCK5H2 SURPRISE VIEW Yes, this one is great, but if you choose to do it don't be tempted to walk to the cache at Lodore Falls (which is "only 0.2 miles away"), unless you are wearing decent walking kit - Short easy stroll it aint! Bambi. Quote

Bambi. No that's very true... and the cache is very hard to find, although we mastered it very quicky but only by pure chance rather than anything else! Quote
+scaw Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 one of my favorites is GCT46C it has some stunning views. This one Nuts about Cumbria is a must in my book the only thing is finding the travel bugs which a roaming about Cumbria but its a brilliant cache Quote
+rutson Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 I'd have to second "Quest for the Ring" but I see it's still unavailable Quote
Ben Pid Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 I have a question about the Lake District.... Anyone know which Explorer OS Map Scarfell Pike is on? So I can buy the correct map.... Any advise appreciated. (didnt see the point in a new thread) Quote
+Paul and Max Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 It’s on OL6 (South Western Area) We’re off to the lakes in June so have been buying the maps in readiness, really looking forward to it. Quote
markandlynn Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 For all the lakes buy OL4 and OL6 but i would recomend buying the harveys hillwalking maps when you get there they are much easier to use than the OSmaps as they dont have to show county boundaries and other things just whats on the ground. As for caches when we went last year the scenery makes all the caches worthwhile. Quote
+RuberyBlue Posted March 24, 2006 Author Posted March 24, 2006 Thanks for the responses. looking to stay around Ambleside but clock up some walking mileage all over the Lakes. I'll let you know how I go:-) RuberyBlue Keep right on!! Quote
+gingerbreadmen Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 If you've not already set off, which judging by the traffic going up there yesterday you may already have, try the Mardale Madness round. Great caches, wonderful scenery and some good walking (not mentioning some fiendish puzzles which you only need to solve to find the 8th, final cache). Oh, nearly forget, it's off the beaten track so nowhere near the amount of muggles that you get around the Langdales etc. Quote
+Queeny Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 I have just done Castlerigg Stone Circle...one of my favourite places on earth!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just beside Keswick if you are going that way. If not...WHY??? Quote
+Toby's Jugs Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Can highly recommend a circular walk taking in Yewdale Beck, Hodge Close, Stang End and Mountains View, all by fellmanshiker. Did this circuit a few weeks ago and enjoyed it hugely. Quote
+gingerbreadmen Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Can highly recommend a circular walk taking in Yewdale Beck, Hodge Close, Stang End and Mountains View, all by fellmanshiker. Did this circuit a few weeks ago and enjoyed it hugely. Fully agree with this one too. Really interesting walk and don't forget to check out the sheep pen or whatever it is by Yewdale Beck - stunning piece of art! Quote
+Wizard William and Team Morris Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 Anything between Keswick and Ambleside will be good which includes the great Castlerigg as previously mentioned. The basic map on the cache pages includes neither of these towns which just happen to be 2 of the 3 most important towns to the lakes and the most visited by outdoor type tourists. Quote
